Johnson & Johnson Services Inc. is hiring for a Director, Construction Safety to be based anywhere in United States OR Ireland OR Belgium OR Netherlands OR Switzerland OR anywhere in Europe or US with ability to travel 50% domestic and international.

This role can be 100% remote and visiting sites within their 50% travel requirement (domestic and international).

The Director, Construction Safety is accountable for developing and implementing construction safety standard methodologies to ensure safe work practices throughout the project life cycle including design, construction, verification, and start up. S/he will collaborate with business partners to align on the safety strategy.

This role is responsible for the overall safety strategy for our contractors who construct our facilities. They must drive a standardized and harmonized approach across the enterprise to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in diverse cultures and regions.

An successful candidate for this role will have extensive knowledge and technical specialization in construction safety engineering to recognize and control risks posed by all construction activities and related works in the construction and renovation of manufacturing sites, warehouses, office buildings, and laboratories.

Key relationships include project teams, Environment, Health, Safety, & Sustainability (EH&S) leaders, and leadership teams in E&PS and Supply Chain. Moreover, s/he will work with local, national, and international regulatory agencies for construction-related safety and leaders of professional safety and engineering associations.

Key Responsibilities

Build, Grow and Sustain Construction Safety Infrastructure

• Sustain and further develop the One Construction Safety Strategy (OneCSS) and related systems and tools. Maintain, grow and enhance the OneCSS program, which is an enterprise-wide, global strategy to prevent injuries and property loss
• Embed and support the integration of OneCSS into the capital project delivery framework (called IDEA) through active training and direct support for new and ongoing projects.
• Establish policies, procedures, and programs in partnership with EH&S designed to promote worker health and safety, ensure compliance with applicable regulations, and integrate safety into engineering designs
• Develop and deploy training programs ensuring alignment of E&PS, EH&S content and objectives
• Lead the Global Construction Safety Team, Stakeholder Forum and Community of Practice (CoP) to ensure safety culture is established and sustained and that project and organizational leaders are aligned with pivotal safety programs.

Provide Direct Support to Construction Projects

• Actively engage with project leaders / designers to ensure all Construction Safety and EH&S requirements are addressed during the design, construction, and commissioning of facilities laboratories through regular stage gate reviews
• Engage with project leaders, Procurement, EH&S to identify and qualify external providers for construction management and safety supervision. Select, appoint, and coordinate the construction safety leaders for major projects
• Provide hands-on review of construction safety plans and act as an expert consultant for complex safety strategies based on project need.
• When incidents occur, support the project / local team with the incident investigation to determine the root causes and define / implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Connect with EH&S to ensure data accuracy and lessons learned are shared across the enterprise

Lead Construction Safety Performance Management and Insights

• Further develop leading metrics program and collect safety metrics. Analyze results and define appropriate actions to continuously improve performance
• Compile statistics and communicate results in addition to safety alerts, updates, bulletins, and procedures with internal & external stakeholders.

• Regularly visit construction sites and conduct inspections/audits/peer reviews in close collaboration with project teams. Discuss positive observations and areas for improvement. Evaluate contractor construction safety plan and OneCSS General Construction Safety Plan.

Qualifications

• University Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level degree required
• Science, Engineering, or related EH&S discipline / degree preferred

Required:

Domain Expertise in the Construction Safety Field:

• Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of progressive experience in construction safety management is required
• Demonstrated success controlling a comprehensive array of Construction Safety & Environmental risks in large capital construction projects is required
• Ability to interact with and influence construction labor force and related field activities in enforcement of regional safety codes and behavior-based safety processes
• Strong track record of accomplishment preventing injuries in core construction, protecting the environment and conserving natural resources
• Fluency in English language
• Travel Requirements: This position will require up to 50% domestic and international travel

• Significant experience leading project safety and environmental professionals and creating Communities of Practices within a matrix organization.
• Strong communication and influencing skills. Someone credible, self-assured, and highly capable of negotiating successful outcomes with key business leaders.
• Must have demonstrated success working across organizational boundaries and building mutually beneficial partnerships.

Business Acumen and Organizational Development:

Strong technical skills and the ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner

• Demonstration of strong business acumen that includes experience working with leaders and all levels of the organization
• Excellent demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to lead teams, produce and maintain project schedules and budgets, create dashboards and track metrics, and assemble project information into clearly written reports that document findings, recommendations, and communicate progress
• Ability to produce and issue trainings and build competencies.
• Ability to develop and execute communication and change management strategies across a large, diverse, global set of partners. Certification in Change Management methodology (ex: Prosci) is a plus.
• Highly developed interpersonal and cross-cultural skills are required to partner well with associates at all levels and functions across our global enterprise
