The Kings County District Attorney s Office (KCDA) is one of the largest prosecutors offices in the country and is committed to developing and implementing innovative prosecutorial strategies that will fulfill our vision of keeping Brooklyn safe while at the same time ensuring fairness and justice for all. KCDA has an exciting opportunity to work as a Discovery Expeditor (Evening Shift: 4PM to 12AM) .
Brooklyn is divided into 23 police precincts, each with its own commander and community precinct council. To better serve these diverse communities, the office is divided into five trial zones that prosecute non-specialized felony and Misdemeanor cases. Each zone encompasses four or five police precincts within a specified geographic area, and is distinguishable by a color-coded designation: Red, Blue, Grey, Green, and Orange.
In light of the sweeping discovery reforms in New York State, our Assistant District Attorneys need more support with preparing their criminal cases. All of our cases involve fairly voluminous discovery, such as police reports, body camera footage, 911 calls, forensic files, security surveillance videos and more. It is critical to our mission that our prosecutors obtain all the necessary discovery and securely share the required information with the defense. New hires will assist with these important duties, and in doing so, will gain exposure to virtually every aspect of a criminal case.
Under direct supervision, with some latitude for independent initiative and judgement, the Discovery Expeditor will be responsible for the following:
Receive, review, and assess contents of files (electronic and otherwise) in new criminal cases to initiate eDiscovery processes
Ensure that items in the electronic file are complete and fully legible, and in the appropriate format, converting if necessary from various formats and media to the Office s standard digital format (e.g., Word document to PDF, proprietary video to .mp4)
Digitize or import, as necessary, documents or items that are not yet in electronic format but are present in the physical file
In consultation with the prosecuting attorney and others, identify necessary items that are not present in the file but must be obtained from the Police Department or any other agency, including by subpoena duces tecum if necessary
Prepare requests, subpoenas, or other items required to obtain outstanding discovery items from outside agencies, obtaining them in an electronic format whenever possible, monitor compliance with the requests, and follow-up as necessary when requests do not produce timely results
Receive outstanding discovery items previously requested, review for completeness and legibility, digitize and convert as necessary, and ensure inclusion in the electronic case file and availability for eDiscovery
Make proposed redactions to discovery material (including in Adobe Acrobat) for review by legal staff, and complete the redactions as directed
As needed, index individual items and prepare other forms and notices
Ensure that appropriately redacted and processed discovery productions are electronically made to the defense within the time required (through the Office s current use of oneDrive or successor systems), and respond to basic inquiries and requests regarding the technical aspects of eDiscovery
Provide eDiscovery support and reference to staff in all parts of the Office, including in the electronic retrieval, review, processing, and discovery of items pertaining to any case, particularly where the other staff member requires technical assistance
Work with other Office units and personnel to process unusual or non-standard items, and ensure their appropriate processing for eDiscovery within a timely manner
Perform related clerical, administrative, and data tracking as needed
Preferred Skills:
Skilled in standard computer operating systems and software (including Adobe Acrobat, Windows, Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel with a strong ability to learn new and proprietary software, with a firm understanding of technical processes)
Ability to interact effectively and efficiently with all levels of personnel both in the Office and in other agencies, including attorneys, law enforcement, managers, IT and technical personnel, and community members
Understanding and knowledge of the local criminal justice system, and ability to act accordingly in anticipation of the needs of attorneys and other staff members
Ability to multi-task and work without constant supervision in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment
Exceptional written and oral communication skills, and the ability to quickly assess large amounts of information
