Reporting to the assigned Deputy County Counsel(s), the primary responsibility for Legal Secretaries is overall support of the Department’s legal processing needs. Legal Secretaries are relied upon to maintain all records and calendars necessary to ensure the fluid operation of the Department; serve as the main conduit for information between the Department and the public, law enforcement agencies and other attorneys within the County Counsel’s Office; prepare pleadings, correspondence and memos from rough drafts, oral instructions, dictation, notes, and prior documents; and prepare periodic statistical reports. Legal Secretary II’s may also train and direct less experienced staff.
There is currently one (1) full time vacancy in the County Counsel’s Office that will be filled at either the Legal Secretary I – Confidential level or Legal Secretary II – Confidential level. Flexible/Hybrid Work Option: An option to telework up to one day per week and work the remaining days onsite is available; however, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. While training and completing the probationary period, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.
Our Highly Qualified Candidate: The ideal candidate possesses one year or more of civil legal secretary experience and working knowledge of the California Rules of Court, Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the California Code of Civil Procedure; excellent communication skills (oral and written); prior experience working in a California County Counsel’s Office; and significant experience with MS Word, ProLaw, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Pro, PowerPoint and database programs. In addition, the ideal candidate effectively performs tasks with minimal supervision and under critical deadlines, prioritizes assigned work, and is a self-starter with outstanding interpersonal skills.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
