GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The purpose of this position is to assist the Division of Operations in training and empowering the Mosquito Control program. In addition to providing Leon County residents and visitors with effective and environmentally sound mosquito control, and to perform necessary services within the division.
NOTE
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Conduct extensive surveillance. Use GPS to locate and record habitat locations. Conduct inspections for mosquitoes growing in man made containers. Conduct post-application checks of habitats treated by aerial larviciding. Identify and inspect new larval habits for inclusion in regular surveys. Locate and record position with GPS unit. Collect larval samples to determine number and types, and for life cycle kits or other demonstrations. Use microscope to assist in identifying and counting larvae and adult mosquito samples in the laboratory.
Mix, load, and apply adult and/or larval mosquito control materials. Determine necessary routes and scheduling of assigned daily treatment orders, and correctly identify no-spray request locations to avoid spray drift into them. Contact residents that have requested notification of control operations in their area. Provide accurate documentation of all control activity, including location, material, rate, and amount applied. Determine what kind of treatment and amount of material is needed to control mosquitoes in an area. Assist in the calibration of equipment.
Repair and maintain back pack sprayers and other mosquito control equipment. Wash, clean and prepare trucks and equipment for proper operation. Perform minor repairs and maintenance on mosquito control trucks and equipment. Calibrate mosquito control equipment.
During property inspections, instruct citizens regarding mosquito control methods. Respond to citizen complaints and assist callers with mosquito service requests and related questions. Assist in preparation of community educational program and distribute materials.
DIFFICULTY
Employee must use independent judgment in determining what areas to treat and which chemicals to use. Also, employee must adhere to deadlines and shifts in attention involving response time for service requests or larva treatment.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
Contacts are made with Fleet Management, Parks and Recreation, and the Warehouse Divisions for the purpose of coordinating spraying schedule, supplying requisitions, and repairing and maintaining vehicles. External contact is made with citizens to take service requests, respond to questions, and to access property.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED
Work is performed through the use of a computer, database software, adding machine/basic calculator, vehicle and/or light truck, GPS unit, laptop, handheld ULV fogger, and backpack sprayer.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed mainly outdoors in multiple locations. One is exposed to a variety of extreme weather/environmental conditions, vapors, chemicals, odors, insects, reptiles, poisonous plants, et cetera. The work environment is noisy, dirty, and dusty. Work is performed on changing floor/ground surfaces and with tools that cause objects to shake and vibrate. Work is mainly performed while standing, however duties may require employee to climb, crawl, balance, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, et cetera. The job requires an employee to lift/push more than 50 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of safe and proper pesticide usage, equipment calibration, Florida traffic laws, computer operation and software, mosquito habitat, equipment safety, safe and proper pesticide usage, basic Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Measuring chemicals, performing calibrations using formulas. Ability to deal courteously with citizens, to read aerial and ground maps for site locations, and to identify mosquitoes using Identification keys. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; six months of related experience is preferred.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Florida Class “E” Operator’s License, and have a favorable driving record.
Selection Guidelines:
Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check, and drug testing.
FLSA STATUS
Position is non-exempt. Analysis: this is mosquito control work involving the operation of insecticide application equipment and the surveillance of larviciding and adult mosquitoes.
