Franklin County Library is recruiting for a full time, Library Technician II at the Central Library location. An employee in this position is tasked with assisting patrons in locating items, reserving items, issuing library cards, collecting fines, and maintaining materials. Work includes the processing of items for the Cataloger both physically and using the integrated library systems. The employee may also transport reserves between branches and may work circulation in any branch. Work requires significant public contact. Work is evaluated for customer service effectiveness and accuracy of work activities, although day-to-day work is performed independently. An employee in this position also manages the library’s social media presence. They also are required to do some correspondence with citizens regarding billing. They are also responsible for assisting the Children’s Services Librarian during Summer Reading on a limited basis.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Checks books, equipment, film, and video equipment in and out; instructs on how to use; empties book drops; helps select films, books, equipment, and videos; provides assistance to patrons in readers’ advisory.
Registers new library patrons and assists patrons with replacing lost cards.
Performs and interprets library policies and procedures such as checking books in and out, overdue charges and waivers, patron registration, loan periods and renewals, reserving books and materials, and lost book procedures.
Takes requests and searches NC Cardinal Consortium to locate books, periodicals, articles, etc.; requests loans and provides necessary information.
Affix appropriate barcodes, labels, etc. to materials, cover items, and enter items into the NC Cardinal Catalog at the discretion of the Cataloger.
Update and maintain accurate data and events on the library’s social media platforms at the discretion of Library administration.
Contacts patrons by phone or mail about overdue materials; accepts fines; answers telephone and provides information. This may include mailings that deal with NC Debt Setoff.
Provides circulation activities and related services at any Franklin County fixed library location.
Assist the Children’s Services Librarian during Summer Reading on a limited basis.
Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials and practices.
General knowledge of computers, audio-visual equipment and other equipment in the library.
Working knowledge of the circulation, readers’ advisory, and basic library procedures; working knowledge of books and authors
Some knowledge of the theory and objectives of a public library system.
Skill in the safe operation of a large motor vehicle throughout the County.
Ability to work independently and to develop and implement a schedule of program operations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens of all ages.
Ability to learn automated system, cataloging, and other library procedures and implement procedures with a minimum of errors.
Desirable Education and Experience:
High school diploma supplemented by courses in library activities or humanities, and minimal related experience working in a library; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirement:
Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License upon hire. Must achieve the NC Cardinal Item Level Cataloging Certification within 3 months of hire. Achieving the NC Cardinal Bibliographic Level Cataloging Certification within 1 year of hire is preferred but not required.

Hiring Range: $35,666 – $36,558
Salary Range: $35,666 – $55,282
