The City of Salem City Attorney’s office is seeking an experienced, proactive, enthusiastic Litigation Legal Assistant. The City Attorney’s office deals with Civil Litigation in both State and Federal Courts, Bankruptcy, Foreclosure, Civil Forfeiture, Condemnation as well as cases involving the Land Use Board of Appeals and the Employee Relations Board.
The Legal Assistant provides highly responsible administrative support work within the City Attorney’s Office to designated attorneys and other staff members. This position involves working directly with the Litigation Attorney and the Litigation Paralegal and includes; electronic and manual management of case files; composing correspondence and pleadings; arranging appointments, meetings, hearings and depositions; fact gathering; basic legal research; creation of legal reports; proofreading of material for content, grammar and spelling errors; and computerized calendaring. The position will also assist the Office Supervisor with a variety of administration duties, including but not limited to review of accounts payable, coordination of facility requests and organization of office equipment and supplies.
The Legal Assistant must have knowledge of state and federal eFiling rules for Oregon; state and federal Rules of Civil Procedure; and Oregon appellate court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals filing procedures. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook is essential with the skill to work with redline/track changes/table of contents/table of authorities desired. Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as customer services skills are desired along with attention to detail, ability to take initiative and follow through with assigned tasks.
