Macdonald & Co. is proudly partnered with a vertically integrated real estate investment, development, and management firm to appoint an SVP of Accounting in Chicago.

Position Overview:

The Senior Vice President of Accounting will play a key leadership role, driving the financial operations of the organization while ensuring the integrity and accuracy of all financial reporting. This role will manage the entire accounting department, oversee regulatory compliance, and develop policies and procedures that align with the company’s strategic financial goals. The SVP will report to executive leadership and act as a key advisor in all financial matters.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting and Compliance

• Oversee accurate and timely financial reporting to stakeholders, including the board and investors.
• Establish and enforce accounting policies and procedures to meet regulatory standards such as GAAP/IFRS.
• Lead the preparation and review of financial statements, delivering insights and recommendations to senior management.
• Collaborate with external auditors, managing audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.

Accounting Operations

• Lead day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts receivable, payable, and cash management.
• Direct the budgeting process, providing financial forecasts, variance analysis, and strategic financial planning.
• Assess financial performance, identifying areas for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
• Contribute to long-range financial strategies, improving financial processes and implementing efficiencies.

Real Estate-Specific Functions

• Stay current on real estate fund structures to ensure compliance with financial reporting obligations.
• Manage investor contributions, distributions, and allocations as part of real estate investment activities.

Leadership and Strategy

• Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment that encourages leadership, trust, and empowerment across departments.
• Act as a key member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the overall company vision, mission, and strategic direction.

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related discipline; MBA or Master’s in Accounting highly desirable.
• Experience in the commercial real estate sector is a plus.
• Knowledge of real estate private equity funds is preferred but not required.
• Proficient understanding of accounting standards, financial regulations, and reporting.
• Familiarity with real estate and fund management software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, Argus) is advantageous.
• Experience in multi-family, hospitality, and industrial development is an added benefit.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
