What are we looking for?
This role is responsible for setting and driving the strategic direction of the MARI and GFSC science and technology portfolio, developing and managing the related partner network and leading the S&T Associates within MARI and GFSC.
The role is also an active member of the Mars Science Leadership team (MSLT) developing and driving strategic focus areas and S&T governance across Mars, Incorporated.
What will be your key responsibilities?
Understand, recommend, develop and manage key research relationships and diverse networks spanning from academia (e.g. UC Davis, TUM, Cornell, Georgia Tech, UTK) to technology companies (e.g Oxford Nanopore Technologies), startups and ventures, National Labs, suppliers, key consortia together with direct reports within the MARI and GFSC.Represent Mars, Incorporated as a highly credible S&T thought leader and peer / partner in relevant global external science and technology forums; credible voice in external environment through conference invitations, peer reviewed publications, social and traditional media; Membership representation with key science and technology external groups e.g. UIDP and GUIRR, etc.Lead the MARI and GFSC team of Associates and an appropriate network of external advisors and collaborators. This includes attracting, retaining and developing a team of appropriately skilled technical experts in areas of relevance for Mars today and tomorrow covering the full spectrum of People and Organization (P&O) processes.Effectively manage an extensive and diverse research portfolio delivered through a team of senior scientists deeply embedded in the external world through a combination of a diverse network of eexternal partnerships and collaborations and a Mars owned research facility (the GFSC) located in China. Work together with the CSO to provide science leadership and direction to the GFSC team ensuring that the facility in China continues to evolve and develop in line with business strategy.Jobholder is an active member of the Mars Science Leadership Team developing and driving the science strategy and governance for Mars, Incorporated. Use broad based insights, networks and horizon scanning inputs to continuously evolve and develop the future science strategy for MARI and GFSC.Understand and appropriately interface with senior key stakeholders internally in alignment with Chief Science Officer. Represent the MARI and GFSC research portfolio in senior level interactions including members of the Board and the Technology CommitteePhD in relevant science field with health and food sciences preferred, ideally combined with experience of data and computational sciencesA leader of scientists: 15 or more years of progressive R&D experience, including 10 years in a leadership position, ideally managing a diverse portfolio of scientific research with experience of translation and / or commercialization, technology transfer.Exceptional ability to develop strong trusting relationships and work cross cultural and geography with senior executives and leaders in order to gain support and achieve strategic business goals. Must be able to build and nurture effective internal and external networks, talented at managing a wide range of stakeholder relationships within complex matrix environments.Comprehensive experience in development and implementation of strategic research initiatives through to commercializationSenior level Global / Regional research experience – ideally with experience of working in both academia and industry, experience of working in or with smaller technology or start-up companies beneficial. A strong track record of scientific leadership within the external world is essential including peer reviewed publications, plenary lectures and panel discussions.
