Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Hiring for Director, Office of Accessibility and Disability Services at Baltimore, MD Full Time

General purpose: Working collaboratively with campus leadership, the Director will provide vision and expertise for
implementing disability and learning support education initiatives on campus. The Director is responsible for the leadership and operational
direction of the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS) consistent with MICA’s mission and vision. This position will
facilitate the role of ADS as a strategic campus partner in creating an accessible, progressive learning and arts environment. The Director
manages an office responsible for implementing appropriate and reasonable accommodations for eligible MICA students and for coordinating
comprehensive academic support services for all students at the College.

Summary of Essential Functions

• Manage and provide leadership on comprehensive student disability and learning support services.

• Collaborate with
  faculty to provide instructional support services and resources and to coordinate appropriate, reasonable and timely academic
  accommodations; collaborate with MICA’s clinical services to streamline and make accessible the process for providing necessary
  documentation.

• Ensure MICA’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
  Act, and the Fair Housing Act.

• Function as a campus leader promoting disability awareness and more widespread knowledge
  related to the needs of students with disabilities.

• Implement best practices related to the provision and
  determination of reasonable academic accommodations, housing accommodations, and assistive technology for individuals with documented
  disabilities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Serve as the primary contact for
  prospective students, current students, parents, treatment providers, staff, and faculty relating to disability documentation guidelines,
  provision of disability services, and study skills support.

• Hire, train, and supervise the Student Learning and
  Accessibility Specialist, and with the Specialist hire, train, and supervise peer academic & creative coaches.

• Review
  psychological, medical, and academic documentation to determine appropriate accommodations.

• Determine eligibility and
  appropriate and reasonable accommodations in consultation with other educational, medical, or psychological professionals.

• Consistent with College policy and federal law, oversee the provision of appropriate and reasonable accommodations through the ADS intake
  and eligibility process to facilitate equal access to educational opportunities.

• Meet with students to provide an overview
  of the College disability accommodation process and the provision of disability accommodations at the post-secondary level.

• Develop new campus programs and partnerships and help coordinate the College’s disability and learning support efforts to ensure
  relevance in contemporary global art and design making.

• Implement and update appropriate policies and procedures for the
  campus pertaining to students with disabilities.

• Educate the MICA community on post-secondary disability issues, equal
  access and disability awareness through faculty and staff trainings, workshops and coordinating guest speakers.

• Serve as
  the primary liaison between ADS and the Faculty Assembly, Residence Life, Health Services, Enrollment Services, Admissions, Operations,
  Facilities, Campus Safety, and the Director of Equity, among others.

• Instruct students in the development of various
  academic study support and executive functioning skills; conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions and workshops on studying, note-taking, time
  management, and other executive functions.

• Maintain detailed records of internal and external communications and
  confidential student documentation.

• Train eligible students on assistive technology programs and facilitate the
  troubleshooting of technical issues with software.

• Assist with campus-wide accessibility compliance efforts.

• Design and administer ADS assessment tools and resources.

• Help identify and engage at-risk students in support of
  the College’s retention efforts and serve on relevant committees to support divisional and institutional needs.

• Represent ADS at College events on campus, attend professional conferences and workshops, network with other institutions and
  organizations.

• Manage the ADS operating budget.

• Participate in on-going continuing education
  training.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Comprehensive understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Fair Housing
  Act in a post-secondary setting and the ability to convey that knowledge effectively.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the
  ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff; ability to interact with a wide variety of
  constituencies on and off campus.

• Fundamental belief in the critical value of equity, diversity and inclusion

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive student information.

• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve
  and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.

• Knowledge of adaptive and assistive technology and technology
  supporting learning accessibility (e.g., Dragon Naturally Speaking, Apple VoiceOver, Read&Write, Google accessibility features,
  Screencastify).

• Strong listening and organizational skills, ability to communicate professionally both orally and in
  writing with careful attention to detail. 

Minimum qualifications:

• Master’s degree
  in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field required.

• Knowledge of disability laws applicable in a higher education setting.

• Five years of experience in post-secondary
  disability services and learning support working directly with students and faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Leadership experience in post-secondary disability services and learning support

• Knowledge of
  Universal Design for Learning and other best practices in creating accessible learning environments

• Strong knowledge of
  Microsoft Office applications and Adobe applications including Acrobat, InDesign, and Illustrator and/or other design software

• Post-secondary teaching experience

• Experience working in an arts and design educational context

• Student
  peer academic and creative coaches (co-supervised with Specialist)

  access information on a computer terminal; and access extensive reading materials.
