Job Description

Position Summary:

Assesses, plans, provides, and evaluates direct patient care to patients in the Behavioral Health Unit. Assures the quality nursing care is rendered to all patients in accordance with the Michigan nurse Practice Act, McLaren Lapeer Region, and nursing department standards. Utilizing the nursing process, functions primarily in direct patient care. Participates in maintaining a safe patient care environment. Maintains patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and respects patient rights. Begins leadership and preceptor participation when performance demonstrates ability.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: * Conducts, documents, and communicates patient assessments

• Observes patient behavior and reports potential problem situations to Charge Nurse and physicians
• Administers medications to patient as directed and documents in patient chart
• Provides teaching/counseling to patients
• Assesses and documents status of patients
• Participates as member of treatment team and performs discharge planning activities
• Assesses and monitors environment to keep dangerous objects, sharps, etc. out of reach of patients
• Assesses staffing needs and assigns personnel as needed
• Initiates and updates treatment plan as needed
• Records appropriate documentation in patient chart
• Provides direct patient care (dressing changes, foley care, evaluation of vital signs, etc.)
• Performs intake procedures (signing forms, checking insurance, notifying physician and MCH, etc.)
• Assists patient with activities of daily living and with patient and staff orientation process
• Monitors lab values, weights and other patient data and notifies physician
• Participates as member of 1st Responder Team
• Attends meetings as scheduled
• Performs other department related duties as assigned
• Patient Advocate at all times

Qualifications:

Required:

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Must possess valid State of Michigan Nursing License
• BLS certified within 30 days of hire
• CPI within 6 months of hire

Preferred:

• Previous work experience in inpatient psychiatric nursing
• Minimum 1 year of experience as staff nurse
