Location: Remote/Mobile Lab – Travel Throughout Michigan Required

Location: Working remotely and/or in the filed in themobile lab RV, at “pop up” mobile lab and/or in-home setting. This position travels throughout the State of Michigan (60%), remote or in Lansing in a standard office environment (40%).

Purpose: This position provides phlebotomy and administrative support to assigned surveillance, biomonitoring, community response, and research projects within the Field Epidemiology Section in the Division of Environmental Health at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This person is responsible for collection of blood and urine specimens from project participants and community residents for biomonitoring, surveillance, research, and response projects but will be cross trained in other aspects of the project such as administering surveys or clinic check in. When not in the field, this person also supports recruitment, logistics and results reporting for biomonitoring, surveillance, community response, and research projects within the Field Epidemiology Section.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide phlebotomy services for surveillance, biomonitoring, community response and research projects in our mobile lab RV, a “pop up” mobile lab and/or in-home setting.
• Obtain a variety of specimens, primarily blood and urine, with the possibility of environmental samples (e.g., water and dust) with additional training.
• Collect blood specimens using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
• Document data collection, electronic or hardcopy records, as required and detailed in project protocol.
• Log samples and related information into tracking systems and is responsible for biological and other specimens including proper labeling, packaging, and arranging for transport or shipment.
• Maintain appointment schedules, log intake information, collect data, and perform related clinical tasks.
• Support project recruitment – including sending letters, making phone calls, and door-knocking as needed.
• Maintain records of actions and results during recruitment efforts and mobile lab deployment.
• Attend in-person and web-based training programs.
• Meet weekly with project teams and daily with assigned field teams to review and manager, identify resource requirements, address operational barriers, plan for future needs, and assit with task management.
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of data as required by state and federal laws.
• Cross trained to fill other field and support duties as necessary.
• Frequent travel within the state, including evenings, weekends, and overnights.
• Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Education typically acquired through the completion of high school. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program that includes an externship in a hospital or busy clinical laboratory setting required.

Experience: One year in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical requirements consistent with a standard clinic or lab environment. Regular evening and weekend hours will be required. Transport supplies to sites around the state. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. May go door-to-door to engage residents and may be exposed to cold, heat, or wet weather conditions. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license and travel within the State, including overnights or weekends. Less frequently, travel may be required outside of the State.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position serves to support the work within the Division of Environmental, specifically Biomonitoring projects. The phlebotomist will work in cooperation with the Biomonitoring team to ensure the Biomonitoring projects goals are achieved, by assisting with mobile lab operations.

The person in this position interacts with the public on a regular basis at the mobile lab and internal staff via meetings, telephone conversations, and e-mails, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health.
