Title: Phlebotomist – Biomonitoring Unit
$20.02 – $25.76 / Posted Thru: 7-14-22
Location: Remote/Mobile Lab – Travel Throughout Michigan Required
Location: Working remotely and/or in the filed in themobile lab RV, at “pop up” mobile lab and/or in-home setting. This position travels throughout the State of Michigan (60%), remote or in Lansing in a standard office environment (40%).
Purpose: This position provides phlebotomy and administrative support to assigned surveillance, biomonitoring, community response, and research projects within the Field Epidemiology Section in the Division of Environmental Health at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This person is responsible for collection of blood and urine specimens from project participants and community residents for biomonitoring, surveillance, research, and response projects but will be cross trained in other aspects of the project such as administering surveys or clinic check in. When not in the field, this person also supports recruitment, logistics and results reporting for biomonitoring, surveillance, community response, and research projects within the Field Epidemiology Section.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Education typically acquired through the completion of high school. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program that includes an externship in a hospital or busy clinical laboratory setting required.
Experience: One year in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical requirements consistent with a standard clinic or lab environment. Regular evening and weekend hours will be required. Transport supplies to sites around the state. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. May go door-to-door to engage residents and may be exposed to cold, heat, or wet weather conditions. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license and travel within the State, including overnights or weekends. Less frequently, travel may be required outside of the State.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position serves to support the work within the Division of Environmental, specifically Biomonitoring projects. The phlebotomist will work in cooperation with the Biomonitoring team to ensure the Biomonitoring projects goals are achieved, by assisting with mobile lab operations.
The person in this position interacts with the public on a regular basis at the mobile lab and internal staff via meetings, telephone conversations, and e-mails, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health.
