Job Description
The Organ Procurement Technician is is an entry-level position, responsible for organ placement and recovery activities in accordance with the Mission of the organization.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSDONOR COORDINATION
- Maintains an on-call schedule of approximately twelve to fifteen 24-hour call days per month (50% call). Additionally, possess the ability to spend an average minimum of 16 hours per week will be spent in the MTN office performing various follow-up activities and supply maintenance.
- Screens referral calls and responds on-site to the hospital to evaluate potential donors, answer questions, and develop a plan for action with the FSC, OPTC and/or Administrator on call.
- Collaborates with the Organ Procurement Transplant Coordinator (OPTC) to determine a plan of action for following potential donor cases, deferral of non-eligible donor referrals or activation of the Family Services Coordinator for offering potential donor families the option of donation in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
- On authorized donors, may provide support to OPTC staff as requested with on-site chart preparation and donor maintenance of donor prior to OR.
- Collaborates with the OPTC Staff to facilitate communications regarding organ/tissue suitability.
- Assists the OPTC in coordinating the logistics of an authorized donor case.
- May assist Organ Preservation Specialists in support role on multi-organ or DCD cases to facilitate efficient organ recovery and allocation.
- Facilitates all aspects of kidney and/or pancreas allocation in coordination with MTN laboratory, OPTC and Administrator On-Call.
- Facilitates the import of organs from outside the MTN service area, communicates with the accepting local transplant surgeon, MTN laboratory, and confirms transportation of the imported organ to the appropriate transplant center.
- Conducts all aspects of the donation process in compliance with established federal and state laws, AOPO and AATB standards, UNOS and FDA guidelines, CDC and MTN policies.
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Completes donor case follow-up and required quality assurance responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintains compliance with documentation practices and MTN Policies and Procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Bachelor’s degree or NREMT-P, RN or RT Certification preferred. Three or more years clinical work experience in a critical care setting strongly preferred.
- Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week and participate in 24-hour call. Must be available on non-call days during normal business hours. Required to work for extended periods of time with few breaks.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy. Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. Must be able to travel within the service area by ground or air.
- Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak and communicate clearly and accurately to convey information to MTN stakeholders in person or by phone; written documentation of relevant information in a professional manner.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
- Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and surgical equipment.
- OSHA Category I – Exposed regularly to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties. Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
