About us
Founded in 2000, the Nantucket Lighthouse School (NLS) is a small, independent Pre-K – 5 school that provides Nantucket children with a Waldorf-inspired educational alternative in a smaller, more individualized setting where staff and teachers have the opportunity to focus on meeting the child where they are. The Lighthouse School is a community of children, families and educators that embodies the joy of learning. Students develop critical thinking and team building skills through a project-based, integrated curriculum of literacy, math, science, history, and creative and performing arts. Compassionate teaching and social emotional learning allows students to cultivate a sense of respect and responsibility for self, others and their community.
The Position
The Nantucket Lighthouse School is looking for a creative, imaginative and thoughtful
classroom teacher for our Small School for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. Students range in ages from 2.9 years old to 5 years old. Teaching our youngest students requires patience and a sense of humor as you nurture positive relationships with the children and engage in meaningful connections with our families who are often sending their child to school for the very first time.
The ideal candidate has experience in elementary education, strong interpersonal and communication skills, experience working with a range of abilities, and a solid understanding of early childhood education and development. We look forward to hiring a creative and multi-dimensional teacher whose personal and professional characteristics will bring energy and new perspectives to our community.
Responsibilities
1. Establish and maintain a healthy and trusting learning environment, fostering nurturing relationships with students while supporting the social, emotional, and academic lives of each child.
2. Using NLS’s longstanding Waldorf-inspired curriculum, create a developmentally
appropriate, project-based and child-led learning environment. Our Small School
classrooms integrate art, nature, handwork, play, and field trips in the community to
engage, inspire and introduce young learners to stories, math, social studies and science.
3. Evaluate students throughout the year utilizing different assessment tools to monitor growth and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
4. Communicate about student progress, write reports and newsletters, hold parent
conferences, and meet with administrators and other faculty to support the needs of all stakeholders.
5. Collaborate with colleagues, attend weekly faculty and/or team meetings, and IEP
meetings.
6. Desire to take advantage of continuing personal goals and increasing knowledge of educational innovations through opportunities for professional development.
Position to start on August 29, 2022
