The Network Engineer’s role is to ensure the stability and integrity of in-house voice, data, video and wireless network services. This is achieved by planning, designing, and developing local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) across the organization, and supervising subordinate staff members. In addition, the Network Engineer will participate with the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of all collaboration and communications hardware, software, and network links. This individual will also analyze and resolve network and communications hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end user training where required.

Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in math or computer science is required. Five (5) years of equivalent work experience in an increasingly responsible network or systems administration position with a working technical knowledge of hardware, network, PC and Server operating systems, including Cisco UCM, routers, switches, and firewalls, HP Servers, Active Directory, Exchange Servers, Windows 9x- NT/2000–XP servers and workstations may substitute for the degree requirement.
Work Experience
Two years of recent experience as a Network Engineer or Analyst with Cisco UCM, firewall or other hardware and software experience is required. Two years of recent experience as a system administrator that entailed significant emphasis on systems security is required.
Extensive application support experience with network monitoring tools, secure shell, Cisco security tools and various filter and scanning utilities or Cisco Unified Communications is required. Similar software experience may be substituted for firewall, anti-virus/security, and patching and sniffer software.
Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards, including Ethernet, IP Addressing, and Wireless 802.11x communications protocols is required. Must have extensive recent hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
Certification/License Requirements:
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Cisco Network Associate/Professional Collaboration is preferred. Certifications in Cisco Networking (CCNA, CCNE), Cisco security or wireless certifications, or equivalent experience is preferred. Collaboration experience is a plus.
Required: The incumbent must pass a national criminal history investigation based on fingerprint identification by the State of Alaska Security Clearance in accordance with 13 AAC 68.215 Direct Access to Criminal Justice Information.

The following briefly describes the main benefits available to regular employees of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. Actual benefits differ by bargaining unit.
Retirement Plans
ARRC Pension Plan – Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Employees contribute 9% of their Earnings on a pre-tax basis. The Railroad is exempt from participation in Social Security; however, Medicare Tax is withheld. Participants vest with 5 years of eligible Vesting Service which entitles one to receive a pension benefit at retirement age.
A new tier of benefits was added for new hires in the ARW and TCU represented unions and for non-represented employees July 1, 2015.
Tier 1 Description
Normal Retirement Age is age 62. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefit is the sum of:
2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service, PLUS
0.5% x Final Average Earnings x Credited Service earned after 2005 and after completing 10 years of Credited Service.
(Final Average Earnings are computed from the 3 highest consecutive years of Earnings.)
Tier 2 Description
Normal Retirement Age is age 65. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefits is 2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service.
Early retirement, survivor and disability benefits are available for vested participants, although the benefit levels differ for Tier 1 and Tier 2 participants.
401(k) Tax Deferred Savings Plan – Participation is optional. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match.
457 Deferred Compensation Plan – Participation is optional for non-represented employees.
Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans
All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees.
Health Insurance Plan
A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, with medical, prescription drug, dental, vision and hearing components. Coverage is also available for the employee’s spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Eligibility after 90 days for bargaining unit employees, and date of hire for non-represented employees.
RR National Dental: mandatory dental-only plan for bargaining unit employees (covers dependents also). Employee paid.
Life Insurance: Basic, AD&D, Supplemental and Dependent Life. Employee paid.
Flexible Spending Accounts: health care and dependent care. Employee paid.
Paid Leave & Holidays
Vacation Leave –accrual per bi-weekly pay period:
Represented Employees
0-3 Years of Service = 4 Hours
>3-15 Years of Service = 6 Hours
>15 Years of Service = 8 Hours
Non-Represented Employees
0-3 Years of Service = 6 Hours
>3-15 Years of Service = 8 Hours
>15 Years of Service = 10 Hours
Sick Leave: accrues at 4 hours (Represented) or 2 hours (Non-Represented) per pay period.
