Position Specific Description
Job Description: This subject matter expert position is responsible for providing power system analysis, steady-state and dynamic modeling, generation and transmission planning for all Wind, Solar, Battery Energy Storage and stand-alone transmission /substation projects within the Engineering and Construction group.
· The Planning engineer will be responsible for conducting studies to ensure the reliability of the Bulk Electric System. This work may include power flow analysis, stability studies, voltage studies, technical analysis of disturbances, implementation of regulatory reliability standards, and coordination of reliability and economic studies with the Regional Transmission Operator.
· Other responsibilities include performing interconnection studies for generation and transmission service requests and providing technical support to all previously mentioned projects within E&C.
· The Planning engineer will study the current and future transmission system configuration, recommend changes to transmission system facilities, perform economic analysis of alternatives and assist with the preparation of transmission expansion plans.
· Primary Responsibilities may consist of:
o Perform power-flow, short-circuit, reactive compensation and stability studies of the transmission systems.
o Assess system impact study results to identify future needs for system improvements.
o Perform studies required to ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards and Transmission Planning Criteria.
o Develop simulation models and review results to support interconnections.
o Support reactive compensation modeling and analyze dynamic behavior.
o Represent NextEra’s interest while interfacing with ISO’s/Utilities/Muni’s/Regulatory agencies to understand and meet the requirements for new interconnections.
o Perform generator interconnection studies and identify system upgrades or additions.
o Train and/or mentor new project engineers.
Required
· Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a strong emphasis in Power Systems.
· Experience: 7+ years in substation / transmission planning and design of high voltage projects.
· The ideal candidate must have a strong knowledge of power systems, steady-state and dynamic modeling, excellent communication (written and oral) skills, a bias for action, proven analytical and problem-solving skills, use sound engineering principles and practices and an ability to provide value engineering analysis and deliver strong technical solutions.
· The position requires technical competence such as the ability to understand system topology, one line and three-line diagrams, basic electrical equipment knowledge and Protection and Control.
· Some travel may be required within North America.
Preferred
· Pursuit of Professional Engineer registration or existing Professional Engineering license
· Strong computer skills including power flow, stability, Microsoft Office Access and other tools
· Leadership skills that provides timely results while working with a diverse team in a matrixed environment.
· Experience with power system transmission analysis tools such as PSSE, PSLF, VSAT, TSAT, SSAT, TARA, ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, MATLAB, EMTP-RV, MAPS, ETAP, PSCAD or other similar analysis software.
· Computer programming experience (FORTRAN, HTML, Python, VBA)
· General understanding of renewable energy – wind, solar, and battery energy storage power generation and substation collection interconnection.
