The Health Physicist II (HP) works independently to perform inspections and investigations for regulatory compliance in a variety of medical, industrial, research and educational centers, and other various settings. Job duties include monitoring and evaluating all aspects for handling, use, storage, transportation, disposal and security of radioactive materials. This position encounters a diverse array of assignments and problems and should be able to complete complex mathematical and technical training from a scientific discipline or background. In addition to performing inspections, the HP may also perform evaluations for safety features and design elements of radiological devices manufactured in NC.Job responsibilities include the following:
This position is home-based. Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following: * Training obtained by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or equivalent training to operate as an independent inspector for an Agreement State Program pursuant to Section 274 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, to include but not limited to:
* Demonstrated work experience or equivalent inspecting against byproduct material, source material and limited special nuclear material;
* Demonstrated knowledge of the biological effects of radiation, practice standards & principles of radiation in medicine, industry, veterinary, education & research;
* Demonstrated skill in radiation detection, methods and equipment;
* Demonstrated knowledge of Agreement State and NRC regulations applicable to ionizing radiation;
* Skilled in using computers with MS Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, scientific software, database manipulation and ability to self-troubleshoot computer issues;
* Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting as a forward-thinking problem solver; and
* Ability to attain and maintain a valid NC driver’s license.
* Physical requirement – Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.Management prefers:
* Experience as an inspector and or license reviewer for an Agreement State or NRC;
* Experience in a regulatory capacity conducting inspections against byproduct radioactive materials, source materials or limited special nuclear material;
* Experience participating in large scale emergency response activities;
* Experience properly assessing and handling technically difficult and controversial areas;
* Experience writing technical reports and communicating scientific and technical material in a clear and concise manner to a diverse audience; and
* Skilled in the use of personnel dosimetry, Geiger-Mueller detectors, ionization chambers, scintillation detectors, spectrometers and testing for removable/fixed contamination.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, physical, or environmental science; health/medical physics, or radiologic science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of applicable experience;
or
