This posting represents four (4) Transportation Worker II vacant positions located in the Wilkes County Maintenance Unit in Division 11.
Positions 60022085, 60022100, 60022145, and 60022147 will be filled from the same pool of applicants. All applicants will be considered for all four (4) positionsThese positions are located in the Wilkes County Maintenance Unit in Division 11. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of
State maintained roads. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, ditching and scrubbing, and flagging traffic. Additional duties include inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks, and the operation of assigned heavy equipment.
Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Work involves shoveling, raking, sweeping, and walking and standing for long periods of time; and be subjected to all types of uneven terrain. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather and extreme temperature conditions.
Positions also require visual acuity. These positions are subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies
Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching
Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures
Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Additional Expectations:A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required for this position. Applicant must either be in possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required.
As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Safety toe shoes are required for this position.
