Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsions Division is currently looking for a Research Scientist/Principal Research Scientist to join our team at our Promontory, UT facility. Role description & Responsibilities: The Heath Management Team creates physics-based models of organic and inorganic material behavior, creates new measurement systems for NDE inspection, and assists other labs with electronics and data acquisition within Propulsion Systems. We oversee processes of generating laboratory sized samples from solid rocket motors and the subsequent chemical and mechanical testing of these samples for service life estimates. We are seeking a Principal Research Scientist with chemistry skills to contribute to our understanding of the complex aging reactions taking place within our energetic components and their polymeric binder systems. You also have the opportunity to participate in the modeling and simulation of aging processes and in the associated programming required to generate service life estimates. Our multidisciplinary team consists of chemists, engineers (electrical, mechanical, and chemical) and physicists all working together to advance the state of health management systems for products containing energetic materials. Each of our team members’ skills are needed to devise new tests, methods, and analyses to provide a deeper understanding of the processes responsible for observed material behavior. You will work with personnel in our well-equipped analytical chemistry and mechanical properties testing laboratories as you define experiments with model compounds, subscale articles, and returned fielded assets. Come be a part of our mission!What you’ll get to do:Collaborate with a skilled group of scientists and engineers to discover and quantify long term chemical changes in complex filled polymeric systems.Work with R&D personnel and equipment to create unique new experiments and techniques focused on understanding chemical changes that occur during component deployment.Define, lead and present the results of chemical testing programs to internal and external customers.Coordinate, oversee, and author test plans, lab work instructions, and test reports.Basic Qualifications:BS in Chemistry or related discipline with 2 years of relevant experience; MS in Chemistry or related discipline with 0 years of relevant experiencePosition can be filled one level higher with BS & 5 years, MS & 3 years, or PhD and 0 years of experienceU.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a Secret clearancePreferred Qualifications:Experience with methods to determine chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics, and thermochemistry of complex organic systems.Experience with analytical techniques: HPLC, NMR, LC/MS, PyGC/MS, IC/MS, FTIR, UV-Vis, GPC, XRF, SEM, AFM, and ICP.Experience with molecular modeling software.Experience with MATLAB, Mathcad, Mathematica and Visual Basic.Experience with basic mechanical property testing and understanding of the chemical-mechanical link.MS in Chemistry or related discipline is preferred Salary Range: $71,000 USD – $106,700 USD Salary Range 2: $87,600 USD – $131,400 USD Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
