Oglethorpe University seeks a Vice President of Advancement to provide leadership to the Advancement team in line with our vibrant strategic plan. In addition, the Vice President of Advancement is expected to closely align the work of the Office of Advancement with marketing and communications efforts to coordinate an integrated, consistent message about the university to internal and external constituents.

The Role
Oglethorpe University seeks a Vice President of Advancement who reports directly to the President and will collaborate closely with the senior leadership team to make strategic decisions affecting the university’s future. This position will be responsible for all fundraising and development activities, as well as provide leadership to the office of alumni engagement. The successful candidate will forge new relationships to build Oglethorpe’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Vice President will also design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.
The Vice President will expand and diversify Oglethorpe’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the Board of Trustees and support these members by serving as the liaison for the Advancement and Community Affairs Committee and individual board members.
The Advancement department currently consists of 15 team members, including a Senior Director of Advancement Operations, a Senior Director of Development, a Director of Philanthropic Communications, and a Director of Alumni Engagement as direct reports.
There is a necessity to create and reinforce active relationships with newer alums, who, in turn, will become the foundation of Oglethorpe’s financial strength in decades to come. Similarly, the Vice President must nurture active, ongoing relationships with leaders across Metro Atlanta. In concert with the president, the Vice President of Advancement must be a servant leader, a captivating ambassador for Oglethorpe, and a compelling manager of the processes supporting the university’s outreach.
In short, the Vice President must be exceptionally good at telling the untold story while providing others with the tools to spread that story even further. Balancing the strategic imperative of a comprehensive development plan with solid implementation tactics will be essential to long-term success. Accordingly, at this stage of Oglethorpe’s maturation and consistent with its hands-on, can-do environment, the Vice President must be both a strategist and effective leader, proactively aligning university needs and donor commitment.
