Assistant Professor of Writing(Two Faculty Positions Available)
Olivet College, a liberal arts college in south central Michigan with a long-standing commitment to inclusion and diversity, invites applications for two faculty positions: Assistant Professor of Writing & Director of Writing Programs and an Assistant Professor of Writing. Both positions are full-time tenure track faculty positions within the Arts & Humanities Department. The Director of Writing Programs will be granted a course release from full-time instruction each semester to carry out these responsibilities. Position Requirements:
Assistant Professor of Writing: Earned MFA or PhD in Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, English, English Education will receive priority consideration; ABD or master’s degree in Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, English, English Education, or a related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in writing will be considered.
Director of Writing Programs: Earned PhD in Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, English, or English Education preferred, though candidates with an earned MFA or who are ABD with extensive experience will be considered. Preference given to applicants with leadership experience in writing-related academic programs and who are currently involved with writing pedagogy.
The vision for the college’s writing programs is to help students develop confidence in their writing and succeed at all levels throughout their academic career. Therefore, successful candidates for both positions will have demonstrated exceptional teaching skills at the undergraduate level and have a passion for teaching writing. We are looking for engaging teachers who are excited about working with first-year students. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated competence working with culturally diverse groups in teaching, scholarship, and/or service.
Candidates must indicate a clear commitment to reflective teaching and provide evidence of the ability to create positive and engaging learning experiences in and outside of the classroom. Candidates who are passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate students in a collaborative, collegial, and engaging academic environment are strongly encouraged to apply.
Position Responsibilities: The successful candidates for both positions will be expected to teach and work with students in the first-year writing sequence at the college. They will be expected to participate in the academic life of the Arts & Humanities Department and the college.
Full-time faculty members at the college instruct 24 credit hours (or the equivalent) over the academic year. Faculty are responsible for course delivery and curriculum development, as well as engagement with students in the capacity of mentor and academic advisor. Along with instruction and student engagement, faculty responsibilities include scholarship and service to the college, the discipline or profession, and the larger society.
The Director of Writing Programs is additionally responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and staffing the first-year writing courses at the college; overseeing course delivery and program assessment; and providing training for new and adjunct instructors in the program. The new Director will also be responsible for reinvigorating a writing center on campus and continuing to build a writing program that integrates itself throughout the college through program innovation. This innovation could include possible integration of multimedia projects, writing studios, writing across the disciplines, or other high-impact practices.
