Olivet College, a liberal arts college in south central Michigan with a long-standing commitment to inclusion and diversity, seeks a Director of Library and Research Services. This is a twelve-month, full-time, location-bound position. The college is in the process of building out an array of graduate and professional programs for learners nationwide. The next director will lead the growth and development of associated library and research services for both on-campus and online learners. The successful candidate will take a leadership role in the development of informational resources and services for students and faculty to support their academic and scholarly work. This includes initiatives to provide training for both students and faculty in the use of research databases and other library resources and well as information literacy training for students. The successful candidate will have a desire to engage the campus community, including distance learners, in these areas. The Burrage Library at Olivet College is an active space for teaching, learning, research, and collaboration on campus. It is envisioned as the hub of academic life outside of the classroom and supports services and resources that stimulate research, scholarship, and creativity. The successful candidate will share this vision and work to create a vibrant environment welcoming to residential undergraduate students, online learners in both graduate and undergraduate programs, and advanced scholars. Our vision for the position is one of engagement and the provision of services to the campus community.
Position Requirements: Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution required; doctoral degree preferred. Expertise and experience necessary to oversee the full array of library and research services necessary for comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programming required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated library experience, including competency with the knowledge and use of electronic resources as well as research services. Candidates must have an interest in and be skilled at training others in the use of these resources, and with designing tools and services to help connect people with needed resources and information including student and faculty research. Candidates must indicate a clear commitment to active engagement with both faculty and students in an academic environment and be passionate about supporting the scholarship needs of a campus community. Experience teaching in-person and online preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated competence working with culturally diverse groups in leadership, teaching, scholarship, and/or service.
Position Responsibilities: Providing leadership in the development of library programs and services that reflect emerging trends and best practices for academic libraries as components of the larger societal educational and informational infrastructure; creating and maintaining a vibrant physical environment that is inviting, engaging, and embodies the contemporary design and understanding of the library as a center for learning and knowledge; developing and monitoring a balanced annual budget for the library that allows for effective delivery of resources and services; developing a clear and realistic strategic plan for the library in alignment with the strategic plan for the college; maintaining clear and comprehensive library policies and procedures that are advertised and promoted; providing efficient, professional library services, including reference, circulation and interlibrary loan services, to students, faculty, staff and community on an ongoing basis.
