The role
We are looking for an experienced Consultant (Communications Manager) to join our Washington, DC team to help global and government clients navigate the US political and media landscapes.
The ideal candidate will be a strong analytical thinker with proven project management experience gained within an agency or in government or a press office.
This individual will have a passion for foreign policy and international partnerships, sharp research skills, and experience managing small teams.
Experience in the fields of international media and/or politics is preferred. A working proficiency of Arabic is encouraged, but not required.
Portland’s US team works closely with our international offices in London, Doha, Nairobi, Singapore, Washington D.C., Berlin, Paris and Brussels.

Responsibilities for this position will include:
Helping to develop and lead global communications strategies, working with Portland’s international offices and clients;
Managing teams and workstreams for major international projects to ensure the successful delivery of communications programs;
Drafting a range of materials, such as press releases, opinion articles, as well as social media and website content;
Responding quickly and accurately to client requests;
Supporting the development of new business proposals and pitches;
Managing the work of more junior team members and supporting their development.
Skills & competencies
You must:
Have related communications experience, ideally gained within an agency or in government, or in a press office;
Have a clear interest and expertise in international affairs;
Have proven management skills and be able to demonstrate personal experience leading projects and teams, ideally internationally;
Have proven experience delivering large-scale communications programmes and integrated campaigns across paid, owned and earned channels;
Have strong personal presentation skills both oral and written (the ability to draft high quality written content is essential);
Be prepared to work flexibly, including possible travel overseas for periods of time;
Be able to manage projects independently, with limited management direction, as required;

The office
Portland’s US team is currently working a combination of days in-office and working from home.
Our US office is located in beautiful downtown Washington, DC. It is a short walk away from the White House and National Mall, and steps from McPherson Square.
Our building has a gym on the ground floor which we offer our employees free access to.
We also have access to the building’s rooftop, which overlooks the Washington Monument and offers a small respite from your desk or the perfect atmosphere for a social event with your co-workers.
