The Industrial Design Department in the School of Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank to begin August 2022. We seek applicants who have a broad vision of the future of the design field as well as the ability to articulate that vision. The department, which offers both BID and MID degrees, is a recognized leader in the field.
Successful candidates will have a strong record of achievement that includes professional practice, contemporary scholarship and creative activity in the field of industrial design; demonstrated knowledge of design theory and research; and the ability to teach across a broad range of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We seek applicants who embrace systems thinking and the interdisciplinary nature of design and engage with current and emerging platforms, skills and issues that impact design. Job Responsibilities:
– Teach three to four courses per semester, including design studios and selected support courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
– Actively participate in curriculum development.
– Advise and mentor students.
– Participate in and lead research activities within and across disciplines with students and other faculty, both in class and in extra-curricular projects.
– Participate in committee work and other service to the department, school, institute and community;
– Contribute to the intellectual culture of the department.
– Develop and maintain personal, scholarly and professional standing in the design field.
– Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Design
Education MFA, MDes, MID or degree equivalent in industrial design program design or a related field.
Experience and Skills
– Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 3 years experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
– At least 3-5 years of recognized, current professional practice and/or creative scholarship in the fields of industrial design, product design or a related discipline.
– Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
– Excellent collaborator with management and leadership skills: ability to meet deadlines.
– Understanding of design theory and design research, system thinking and sustainability as well as historical and critical perspectives on contemporary design. Expertise in a broad range of methodologies, concepts, techniques and technology related to contemporary design practice.
Preferred
– Demonstrated ability to work with other faculty and students on interdisciplinary and collaborative projects and dedication to the building of a community of scholars/educators.
– Experience in curricular design, coordination and development.
– A record of successful funding procurement and grant activity.
