The Adventure Education department at Prescott College is seeking a talented, compassionate, and experienced educator with a variety of outdoor skills sets to contribute to an innovative, dynamic, and nationally recognized program. We define adventure education as an experiential process that takes place in challenging outdoor settings where the primary purpose is to build and strengthen inclusive inter-and intra-personal relationships, personal health, leadership skills, and environmental understanding. In addition, we are seeking individuals who are Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) and can develop a recreational therapy certification program for our graduate and undergraduate students with a focus on theoretical constructs and applied methodology for a wide range of conditions and illnesses. We seek individuals who have significant experience teaching and/or guiding in remote field settings involving several of the following activities: rock climbing, mountaineering, ski mountaineering, avalanche education, whitewater river travel, sea kayaking, physical geography, interpersonal communications, group facilitation, emergency medical care, outdoor leadership. Experience working in and out of the field with diverse communities as well as a commitment to providing wilderness opportunities to minoritized populations is highly desirable. We seek candidates inspired by our mission to protect the environment and actively promote social justice. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to a multicultural perspective, use inclusive pedagogies, and connect subject matter to areas outside of their primary field of expertise using excellent communication and teaching skills. Applicants must be able to teach in both field and classroom settings. Our field courses can last from three to eight weeks at a time. While teaching undergraduates in the resident program will be the primary responsibility, qualified candidates may also be assigned teaching or advising responsibilities in our online graduate program in Outdoor Education Leadership. The position will carry the rank of full faculty with an approximate appointment of 70% teaching, 20% service and 10% scholarship.
Qualifications: All candidates have demonstrated high-quality teaching, have an ability to mentor students, and preferably with a record of publication. The ability to work collaboratively with other faculty members and stakeholders is required. Ph.D. preferred in or closely related to recreation or leisure science, psychology or human development, or human dimensions of natural resources. All-but-dissertation candidates will also be considered as well as those with exceptional and equivalent tested field experience. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and have a valid driver’s license.
