The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for designing, testing, and implementing packaging designs that are an integral part of Schluter’s Product Development process. They will be reviewing and improving existing packaging designs as needed. They will work with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals that are aligned with Schluter’s product standards as well as providing assistance to other duties in the Department as needed.

Package Design

• Participate in necessary project meetings to gather all package requirements
• Utilize ArtiosCAD or Solidworks software to design and create drawings for potential packaging as it relates to product, marketing, sales, warehouse or fulfillment needs
• In conjunction with purchasing and project team, evaluate cost efficiencies as they apply to packaging designs
• Present designs in a cohesive manner to the necessary departments for pre-alignment of designs
• Review design parameters with supplier for design, material and capability confirmation
• Request samples from suppliers as needed for form, fit, function review with project team and future
• Route pre-aligned designs through product data management system for approval and filing and make edits as required
• Utilize CAPE pack software to confirm pallet configuration, measurements and weights for all products
• Communicate packaging dimensional and weight data as required to necessary internal platforms
• Review and specify ancillary packaging needs and improvements as they relate to non-primary packaging needs (i.e. pallets, dunnage, tape, etc)
• Create and submit artwork die-line to Marketing as required per the project timeline

Package Testing

• Help to improve and maintain Schluter packaging testing protocols
• Conduct testing as specified in protocols for all new package design implementation as it pertains to the requirements for the package
• Prepare and organize the shipment of items to be tested in a safe and secure way to external labs
• Create and submit internal and external packaging test reports, including summary of results to project team
• Analyze results and provide potential solutions for package testing failures

Package Specification

• Improve and maintain Schluter packaging specification template
• Create SOP for specification creation and approval
• Create specifications for all packaging items and store in data management system
• Create SOP for specification creation and approval

Non-Conformance Packaging Review

• Work with quality to review packaging non-conformances on a monthly basis
• Create root cause analysis of packaging failures and establish a plan with product management to resolve
• Create improvement order and lead the project to completion with the necessary department representatives

Drawing Review and Management

• Review and approve engineering drawings as the Packaging Engineer representative.
• Provide feedback about drawing improvements as it could relate to packaging.

General Responsibilities

• Communicate quality concerns to Operators, Supervisors, Engineers, or Management.
• Provide backup for other Engineer Department areas, as needed.
• Attend trade shows and trainings as recommended by Management
• Travel to suppliers for site visits and audits, as needed.
• Other duties as assigned by Management.
• Represent Schluter Systems in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner in all matters.

• 4-year Bachelor of Science in Packaging Science/ Packaging Engineering.
• Packaging Engineering experience preferred (0-4 years).
• Strong problem solving skills.
• Analytical thinker utilizing data to make decisions.
• Ability to read and follow mechanical drawings and technical specifications.
• Detail oriented and well organized.
• A Quality mindset and inherent personal characteristics to be meticulous and strive for excellence.
• Excellent organization and time management skills.
• Proficient at technical writing.
• Ability to operate technical dimensional measuring equipment, such as digital calipers, spectrophotometers, and optical microscopes/comparators.
• Familiarity with electrical safety and testing and dimensional measuring equipment.
• Strong computer competency (e.g., Excel, Word, file/document organization; CAD, ArtiosCAD, Solidworks, CAPE pack).
• Project management experience a plus.
• Team player works well with others or can be productive working independently.
• Strong communicator verbally and in writing.
• Available to work overtime as required.
