JOB SUMMARY

Employee serves as primary person responsible to patients for processing of payments on accounts for SMH and SR. Employee will process incoming payments on accounts, dealing with a wide array of pay sources, such as Medicare, Medicaid, third party insurers, and private pay. Employee will coordinate with various departments for the issue and maintenance of petty cash such as Welch Outpatient Clinic, Emergency Department, and Dietary. Employee posted all other misc. income as specified by Controller. Employee manually makes deposits into the Bank daily.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Balance daily deposit sheet for accuracy. Turn them in daily to both Staff Accountant and Financial Analyst.
• Maintains responsibility for maintenance and reconciliation of Petty Cash box and safe – for maintaining accountability and oversight for limited cash refunds for small purchases with appropriate documentation.
• Responsible for receiving and posting of patient payments on account. Must insure that research is conducted to appropriately apply payment to correct date of service. Provides receipt of payment to patient.
• Utilizes Emdeon to upload 835 files to Cerner for Payment posting. Remains current on which payors send payment in 835 format.
• Must be able to distinguish between patient pay types to include self-pays versus commercial insurance, and the nuances of each payment type for posting into the AS400 computer system or Cerner.
• Provides petty cash to various departments of the hospital, and collects daily revenues from these departments
• Reviews, validates and posts Medicare, VA, State of Wyoming payments as received, insuring that such payments are posted to each patient account appropriately.
• Processes the Daily Business transactions, applying close attention to detail relative to payment types and the various payment transactions daily including non-patient revenue using codes provided by Controller.
• Process Home Health payments and activity in the Cerner – Homeworks – financial system for monthly activity and print monthly reports for Controller. Make daily deposit to the Bank.
• Balance against Bank to make sure that daily deposits are accounted for an accurately enter in computer.
• Complete a discounted rate for services based on current costs to patients, other health care providers, and other interested parties.
• Must maintain a working knowledge of hospital billing processes and all related department policies in order to facilitate the collection process.
• Prepares patient itemized bill upon request; explains charges, payments and adjustments.
• Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
• Treats patients/families professionally, with respect and dignity.
• Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
• Ensures that documentation meets current standards and policies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSES

• High school graduate or equivalent, required.
• Course work in business math or bookkeeping or one to two years of college, preferred.
• Minimum of two years experience in an accounting department, preferred.
• Experience as a cashier given preference.

Additional Skills

• Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Computer knowledge required, exhibiting exceptional word processing and excel skills.
• General knowledge of clerical accounting practices i.e. processing forms, reconciling accounts.
• Knowledgeable of office equipment including fax machine, photocopier.
• Great customer service skills and working in a team environment.
