JOB TITLE: Medical Laboratory Technician
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
RISK CATEGORY I
REPORTS TO: Chief Medical Technologist
JOB SUMMARY: Performs and interprets routine diagnostic procedures in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, limited chemistry and limited microbiology procedures. Does not perform procedures in the absence of a qualified laboratory technologist, supervisor, or pathologist.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs and interprets routine diagnostic procedures in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology responsibility is limited to plating cultures on appropriate media; the education and training of the individual as determined by the supervisor; provides assistance in blood collection, processing of specimens, and reception duties; starts up and adjusts laboratory equipment; maintains daily quality control, records and reports to supervisor any “out of control” or trending results; assists in bone marrow procedures; performs routine maintenance of instrumentation and records action taken; and assigns state tests priorities; performs related work as required. May be exposed to hazardous drugs. Attends OSHA training upon initial employee orientation and annually completes an OSHA competency.
RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients, staff, physicians, and administration. Must maintain a courteous and effective working relationship with patients, staff, physicians, and administration.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE: Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology; high school graduate who has successfully completed an official military laboratory procedures course and has held a position as an enlisted laboratory technician; alternative training available in New York State regulations. Possesses a general working knowledge of routine laboratory procedures commensurate with the education and training available in New York State regulations and holds a current NYS License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires sitting, standing bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 20 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment such as computer, fax, calculators and telephone. Requires normal hearing and vision.

JOB TITLE: Point of Care Testing Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
REPORTS TO: Laboratory Technical Manager
SUPERVISION GIVEN: None Given
JOB SUMMARY: Point of care testing (POCT) is defined as diagnostic testing at or near the site of patient care. Point of Care testing sites must adhere to policies of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment. The Coordinator oversees all offices performing point of care testing as well as training staff to perform point of care testing.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The POCT Coordinator will monitor point of care testing offices for adherence to the following guidelines:
DAILY/WEEKLY/MONTHLY/SEMI-ANNUAL RESPONSIBILITES:
§ DAILY: The coordinator will work on any issues that may arise with office testing. Review policies and procedure and update them as needed.
§ MONTHLY: The Coordinator will make observations of the office/patient service center to ensure compliance with the guidelines. Quality assurance reports will be issued if there any incidences of non-compliance. The coordinator will review control inventory. A monthly report of all observations and interactions with staff members will be forwarded to the Clinical Director, Director of Ancillary Services, Laboratory Manager, Laboratory Compliance Manager and the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Office Manager when applicable..
§ SEMI-ANNUAL: Linearity and Correlation studies will be conducted on all glucometers used for point of care testing and at the patient service center. A competency check will be given to all physicians performing microscopic procedures.
RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with staff, physicians, and administration. Must maintain a courteous, and effective working relationship with staff, physicians and administration.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE: B. S. degree in Medical Technology, Licensed by NYS Department of Education as Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
Comprehensive knowledge of standard laboratory practices and techniques, instrumentation and terminology in each area of specialization. Some degree of administrative ability to directly assist the Laboratory Technical Manager in the entire administrative routine connected with point of care testing to include laboratory operation, supervisory ability, demonstrates good scientific judgement, conscientiousness, initiative, flexibility, and dependability
