About the Department:
Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU by securing funding for University priorities; by promoting meaningful involvement in the life and work of the University; by heightening international, national, state and local awareness of SMU; and by supporting the enrollment of a diverse and able student body.
DEA comprises the offices of Office of the Vice President, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Development Services, Program Services and Donor Relations, Marketing and Communications, Principal and Major Gifts, and School and Project Development.
SMU continues to leverage the benefits from the largest fund-raising campaign in its history to achieve dramatic increases in academic quality and impact.
About the Position:
The Writer/Editor supports the marketing plan for the University in alignment with Development and External Affairs goals and SMU’s strategic plan. This position reports to the Creative Director. The Writer/Editor works to strengthen engagement with SMU donors, prospective donors, prospective students, alumni and friends and the broader Dallas community. Managing the SMU brand messaging execution for Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, editorial efforts and the SMU Magazine, the Writer/Editor leverages the unique strengths of compelling storytelling across all communications channels to personify and advance the SMU brand.
Essential Functions:
Create content using appropriate voice and tone to strengthen engagement with SMU donors, prospective donors, prospective students, alumni, friends, and the Dallas community and enhance the local, national and international profile of the University. Oversee freelance writing support to work strategically and in an integrated way with Marketing and Communications colleagues across all channels, working with the Creative Director to ensure content pillars are considered. Serves as editor of content, including that written for print and digital formats. Leverage the unique strengths of compelling storytelling across all communications channels to personify and advance the SMU brand.
Adheres to AP Style, familiarity with exceptions based on University style and growing institutional knowledge of SMU and its place in the landscape of Dallas and in higher education with a growing reputation for outstanding teaching, meaningful research and scholarship.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Writing, Creative Writing, or Communications.
A minimum of three years of work experience is required, preferably in a professional writing and editing capacity, and/or in public relations or marketing. Electronic, web and/or online experience is also required.
Experience working in a fast-paced team environment highly desired. Work experience that included team-based projects as well as independent project management requiring initiative, creativity and relationship management preferred. Experience working in support of higher education and/or for a nonprofit is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Candidate must have proven ability to articulate complex ideas in writing and verbally. Must also have the ability to produce error-free communications and other materials. The ability to write in short and long formats for print, electronic and web, adapting written voice and style to a variety of audiences/media is required. Proficiency in AP Style, proofreading, interviewing, fact checking, and story research is essential. Strong editing skills desired.
Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time-management skills with the ability to proactively manage multiple projects, ensure high-quality standards, ensure deadlines are met. Must also demonstrate a strong attention to detail.
Candidate must possess strong problem solving skills with the ability to be resourceful, proactive and seek assistance as needed. The ability to work both independently and in a team-focused, collaborative environment is essential. Must also be a team player with a can do attitude.
Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, especially Word and Excel. Experience with Asana, FilemakerPro, and/or Adobe Creative Cloud is strongly preferred.
