Job Overview
SoCal Gas is looking for an individual with extensive construction experience within our Transmission and Storage group. We are in search of someone who is mechanically inclined and tool-oriented and demonstrates leadership. With pay starting at $40.710 / hr. we are offering comprehensive training to become a safe and efficient Pipeline Technician; skills that will prepare you for a career with SoCal Gas. Current opening is in Needles, CA. This is a DOT position.
Position Objective
Performs a wide range of semi-skilled and skilled work as a member of a crew, associated with the operation, maintenance, and construction of the transmission pipeline system.
Job Duties include and Responsibilities
Excavates and fills trenches and excavations using power as well as manually operated tools and equipment.
Wraps or coats pipe, installs shoring, assists welder, installs fittings, loads and unloads material and equipment.
Patrols pipelines on foot or in vehicles. Locates and marks pipelines and conducts surveillance of construction activities in the area of the pipeline.
Lubricates, operates, and maintains pipeline valves of all sizes and types.
Operates and maintains end closures and blow down stacks.
Conducts leakage surveys.
Prepares various Company forms and, through sketches and written reports, documents work performed, changes made, and conditions found.
Operates a wide range of pneumatic, hydraulic, and manual tools. Installs and operates basic tapping and pressure control equipment.
Safely uses, handles, stores, and disposes of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
Drives heavy duty vehicles such as dump trucks and boom trucks and operates construction equipment such as cranes.
Performs driver inspection on vehicles and construction equipment.
Performs skilled operations and routine maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
Performs gas handling, fire control and fire watch operations on pipeline tie‐ins. Sets up and
operates oxy/acetylene, nitrogen and natural gas regulators, fire control stacks, and purging equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance on cathodic protection equipment. Takes and records cathodic protection reads.
Assists with the installation, removal, repair and calibration of cathodic protection equipment on Company pipelines.
Takes routine cathodic protection reads and assists troubleshooting.
On some assignments, performs scheduled and routine inspection and basic maintenance on equipment such as gas engines, turbines, compressors, pumps, fans, boilers, and auxiliary equipment in a compressor station.
On some assignments, assists in starting and operating station equipment. Identifies and responds to unusual and unsafe conditions such as leaking, defective, or overheated equipment.
Sweeps, cleans, rakes, paints, cuts weed, etc. around all types of facilities.
Inspects, maintains, and operates fire suppression equipment.
On some assignments, takes well pressures and storage tank gauge readings, changes charts.
Installs and performs basic maintenance on various types of pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical equipment or devices such as: meters, regulators, actuators, filters, gauges, valves, recording gauges and charts.
Assists with instrumentation installations and repairs. Installs piping and tubing for various instruments.
Understands basic principles of odorizers.
Inspects, maintains emergency equipment such as Nomex coveralls, respirators, etc.
Performs basic computer operations.
Performs skilled operations of heavy construction equipment.
Performs gas handling, fire control and fire watch operations on pipeline tie‐ins. Sets up and operates oxy/acetylene, nitrogen and natural gas regulators, fire control stacks, and purging equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance on cathodic protection equipment. Takes and records cathodic protection reads.
Sets up and performs hydrostatic tests using recording clocks/charts, gauges, valves, high pressure hoses, dead weight testers, etc.
Installs and operates small tapping and pressure control equipment.
Investigates leakage, assesses, documents, and centers leaks. Operates and maintains flame ionization unit.
Plans, selects materials and equipment for traffic control.
Assists with specialized welding and cutting operations of all kinds.
Equipment
Operates or uses pipe locator, leak detector, grease gun, shovel and other pneumatic, power, or hand tools, gauges, hand‐held electronic instruments, laptop computer, heavy construction equipment (e. g., backhoe and crane).
Minimum Qualifications

Mechanical experience, experience with internal combustion engines or other mechanical equipment, vocational training in basic electricity and electronics, previous experience in related industries, experience with operating common word processing and spreadsheet programs.
Other
May be required to work various shifts on call on a rotating basis. May be required to respond to emergency call‐outs and be able to work occasional extensive hours. Some assignments may require Class A or Class B license with special endorsements (i. e., X or H). May be required to job site report.
Physical Demand
Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 50 pounds with lifting up to approximately 100 pounds as required. Emergency situations may require extended hours. Equipment and materials exceeding 75 pounds are to be maneuvered through leveraging techniques and employees are instructed to work within their optimum carry ability and use lifting devices, carry aids (e. g. hand truck) and/or request assistance. This job requires a very significant level of physical strength and endurance needed to effectively and safely perform the job duties as listed above (e.g., upper body/lower body/torso/back strength).
Environmental Conditions
Work is predominately outdoors or in an engine/equipment room. Exposed to extremes of climate and temperatures, high noise levels, rotating and vibrating equipment, rough terrain, occasional work on ladders or high platforms, as well as confined spaces. May be exposed to high pressure gas. May be required to handle hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
