Job Discription
The Morning Staff is expected to respectfully interact with, observe, and supervise the residents of Port St. Vincent, report observations in the shift log, deal with physical plant emergencies as they arise, deal with conflicts between residents, assess and deal with intoxication from alcohol or other drugs, and enforce all of the Port’s rules at all times. Plan, prepare, and cook breakfast, and clean up afterwards.
Specific Duties Include:
Strive for the safety of all residents by carefully observing them and remaining alert to their actions.
Show courtesy and respect to every resident and visitor to the Port.
Serve breakfast properly and on time. Plan menus to rotate food for freshness and quality. Throw all expired food into the dumpster.
Pack lunches for residents who are working and have signed up on the board.
Secure the office and kitchen areas.
Make sure that both the kitchen area as well as the dining room are clean and uncluttered at the end of your shift for the day’s volunteer group. (i.e. dumped garbage, donations put away, wiped tables, cleaned kitchen, cleaned countertops, washed and put away dishes, pots and pans, mopped floor, boxes broken down and put in recycle bin, expired food dumped, etc…) No cooking in kitchen by residents. No unauthorized persons in kitchen.
Deal with major messes that may occur. (i.e. toilet overflows, urinal overflows, pipe bursts, etc…) Call a plumber if necessary. Report these in the log.
Monitor TV programs and change them if they fail to comply with the Port TV policy.
Ask residents to leave when they come in with alcohol on their breath or they appear under the influence of any intoxicating substance. Do not allow them back in until the director makes a decision about their continuing in the program. Report these in the log.
Take fee payments from residents. Give them receipts, have them sign the sealed envelope which holds the payment, and place the envelopes in the safe. Then log the transactions in the shift log.
Provide when asked, remind residents as necessary, and observe at all times the taking of medications by the appropriate resident. Record this on the med log.
Refer any potential residents to the director the following morning. In emergency situations, admit a new resident for the night in an open dorm or library bed only if open. Advise them that it is for that night only and that they must see the director first thing in the morning. Report these in the log.
Remain awake and alert on the job for the entire shift.
Phone applicable emergency personnel (i.e. Crisis Intervention Personnel, Police, Firefighters, EMTs, etc…) when crises occur. Report these calls in the log. Call the director on his cell phone if it’s an emergency situation.
Report for work and punch in/out consistently on time.
Report to the director any suspicious behavior regarding residents and/or staff. (i.e. drug use, intimidation, drug sales, theft, etc…)
Accomplish all other tasks assigned by the director.
Qualifications:
Have good verbal and written communication skills.
Able to work with a culturally and socially diverse population.
Able to speak to people in a calm, courteous, respectful manner.
Have good observational skills. Able to observe carefully and report accurately on residents’ behavior.
Able to intervene and resolve confrontations in a non-violent manner using de-escalation techniques.
Be able to plan, prepare, and cook, well-balanced and tasty meals.
Have good cleaning skills. Able to wash and put away dishes, pots, and pans – Clean kitchen and dining room.
Have good organizational skills. Able to keep the kitchen and refrigerator organized on a day to day basis.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 60 lbs to chest level, and carry it 25 ft. frequently.
Must be able to lift 30 lbs over your head frequently.
Must be able to quickly scale stairs to the second floor.
Must be able to bend over to pick items up off the floor frequently.
