Solid Waste Superintendent Government Job Dept-01929 Full Time

Under general direction, plans and administers the day-to-day operations of municipal solid waste collection; supervises disposal, diversion and recycling programs; makes public presentations and responds to public inquiries; performs related work as required; acts for the Solid Waste Director in their absence.

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of the position’s essential duties. They are descriptive, not limiting.  Administers general policies and procedures and supervises the operation of municipal solid waste collection, treatment, disposal, diversion and recycling programs; develops and recommends to the Solid Waste Director changes and modifications in operating procedures as required to meet changing times and conditions; coordinates procedures to address legislated requirements; coordinates activities with other City divisions; deals with a variety of businesses, manufacturers, suppliers and service organizations from which the City obtains materials, equipment, supplies and services; represents the City with other local agencies in solid waste matters; supervises monthly reporting and cost records; prepares budget estimates and work programs and administers annual budget.

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in the Physical, Biological or Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field; AND 
• Five years progressively responsible experience in solid waste administration, including collection activities, disposal operations and waste diversion or related experience, including three years at a supervisory level; OR
• An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described job duties.
• Possession of a valid California Class “C” driver’s license.  
• Highly desirable:  National and State certifications in solid waste industry areas such as environmental health, engineering, safety, or related fields and certifications offered by professional organizations, i.e., the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), US Composting Council (USCC), Federal Emergency Management Act (FEMA), or other engineering or industry associations.
