Solid Waste Truck Driver Government Job Dept-Facilities Community Services Full Time

Under general supervision, to operate equipment on assigned routes; to perform commercial and residential refuse collection and recycling activities; and to perform minor maintenance on solid waste vehicles and equipment. 

• Safely operates a variety of heavy equipment including solid waste front loaders, rear loaders, automated solid waste collection vehicles, and recycling vehicles;
• Performs daily inspection and monitoring of operating condition of assigned collection vehicle;
• Follows required maintenance schedules for assigned vehicle;
• Performs minor maintenance on collection vehicles including cleaning inside and outside and servicing;
• Monitors and adds fluids as required;
• Follows assigned route(s), servicing containers which are located on the property of residential and/or commercial customers to collect and load refuse and/or recycling vehicles;
• Transports refuse to a designated sanitary disposal site;
• Monitors operating condition, and cleans and lubricates truck daily;
• Informs the supervisor of operating condition of solid waste collection vehicles, vehicular accidents, and conditions which prevent pick-ups of refuse and/or recyclables as scheduled;
• Provides training to new and temporary employees in solid waste collections and safe working procedures;
• Provides handicap Blue Curb service to customers as necessary;
• Moves bins from enclosures to street;
• Off-loads overloaded bins so that materials do not spill or cause damage to property; clean up any additional trash around the bins or in the enclosures;
• Provides customers with service of locking and unlocking of enclosed bins;
• Notifies supervisor of customer inquiries and requests for information regarding refuse containers, types of refuse collected, and refuse regulations;
• Refers complaints to the appropriate supervisor or manager;
• Maintains records of activities including additional yardage collected and service problems; and
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

• Two years of increasingly responsible experience in driving/operating heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles;
• Experience in refuse collection and operating solid waste vehicles is desirable.

• Equivalent to a high school diploma.

• Possession of a valid Class B driver’s license.

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 65 lbs.;
• Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
• Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
