Join a growing dynamic team of product design professionals. For nearly 25 years SPARK has developed a wide range of consumer and commercial products from operating tables to blenders. Our clients include Fortune 500 companies, innovative university grant projects, and individual start-ups. This range of experience and expertise reflects the broad design backgrounds found at SPARK. A designer at SPARK is one that thrives on new challenges, and is energized by finding bold and creative solutions to real world problems.
Job Brief:
SPARK is currently looking for a creative junior to mid-level Industrial Designer who can immediately contribute to substantial client projects. The candidate will work on all stages of development including user research, creative ideation, ergonomics and human factors, aesthetic styling, modeling, prototyping, and design documentation. The position requires creative design aptitude with a customer service demeanor.
Position Summary:
This is a full-time position. The employee will be responsible for adding creativity, visualization, and clarity to the design process. You will be working directly with our Design Manager in order to expand our industrial design capacity and capabilities, as well as aiding engineers with aesthetics and ergonomics via conceptual sketching, computer renderings, organic 3D modeling, etc. The employee is also expected to effectively communicate directly with clients and manage their projects and budgets efficiently.
At this time SPARK is seeking a proficient sketcher with a keen eye towards form, style, and detail. SPARK already employs a strong team of mechanical minds and CAD experts, so we are instead looking to bolster areas where we have fewer resources. Mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing processes will be beneficial, but SPARK is happy to assist in training hires to design for manufacturing and other peripheral skill sets. Be prepared to learn!
This will ultimately be a multi-faceted job, so the ideal candidate will be flexible and enjoy working in many capacities as needed. SPARK is a casual environment where employees support one another, but we do expect a strong work ethic and a self-motivated attitude. Overtime hours are not frequent, but do happen occasionally as is the nature of a consultancy environment. We always strive to exceed the expectations of our clients and work hard to deliver meaningful solutions to clients both large and small.
Responsibilities:
+ Personal project management and organizational skills
+ Develop efficient design processes to achieve novel results within real-world project constraints and budgets
+ Consult directly with clients to determine product market needs and project constraints and requirements on a case-by-case basis
+ Seek out market and user behavior data and synthesize large amounts of information into meaningful reports
+ Create both rough and presentation-quality concept design sketches and renderings
+ Fluid use of the Adobe Creative Suite for image manipulation and report building
+ 2D and 3D CAD design documentation (SPARK utilizes SolidWorks and Onshape)
+ Hands-on modeling and prototyping to test and demonstrate concepts
+ Ergonomic analysis and refinement for any range of user types
+ Ability to work with other product development specialists such as engineers, manufacturers, and market analysts to maintain good design principles throughout the process.
+ Regular client communication
Requirements:
+ Four year Industrial Design degree or equivalent experience
+ 1-3 years of relevant experience preferred. Exceptions may be possible for a talented candidate, but must be capable of contributing to projects immediately
+ Strong hand-sketching and visualization skills. (Digital tablet will be provided)
+ Demonstrated sense of form, proportion, and style, as well as attention to details as applied to product designs for varying brand languages, users, and markets.
+ 3D CAD skills for creating “master models” to define design intent. (Some experience is desirable, but not a firm requirement—SolidWorks or Onshape preferred)
+ Working knowledge of and ability to learn new design tools (Adobe, Keyshot, etc.)
+ Comfortable applying industrial design principles (user-centered design, ergonomics, aesthetics, etc.) to real world problems
+ Hands-on ability to build and assemble models and prototypes
+ Basic understanding of materials and manufacturing processes
+ Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner
+ Open to occasional travel for clients projects
