Star Tribune is hiring a Fleet Operations Manager to join our dynamic team. As the Fleet Operations Manager, you will lead all nightside loading and transportation functions to ensure a quality product is produced and delivered to our customers in a timely, efficient and safe manner. Star Tribune has the fourth-largest metro daily print newspaper circulation in the country. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership and guidance to all night side staff including drivers, loaders, load leads, and control tower specialists, to ensure all Company core values are guiding our interactions.
- Provide appropriate communication and documentation to support delivery accuracy for outlets and depots.
- Work with co-managers to assess and analyze departmental budgets to find ways to minimize expenses and optimize profits.
- Monitor live production runs and make necessary modifications to accommodate variable conditions due to current events, weather, and production adjustments.
- Responsible for achieving performance standards utilizing effective coaching skills, training, direction, follow-up, and/or corrective action when necessary.
- Ensures strict compliance and adherence to all department safety policies and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
- Practice positive communication principles, that encourage a sense of trust of managers to improve morale. Meet regularly with all night side employees to ensure relevant information is being shared and communicated in a timely fashion.
RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports directly to and receives assignments from the Director of Transportation and Logistics.
- Provides and models leadership to Load-leads, Control Tower Specialists, Loaders, Drivers, and Mechanics.
- Recognizes and fosters Fleet’s relationship with upstream suppliers and downstream customers. Daily communication with upstream Mailroom and Pressroom as well as downstream Circulation customers (Circulation Managers, Home Delivery and Single Copy Agents).
SKILLS
- Interpersonal skills – must communicate with both executives and staff employees in order to create and administer policy
- A thorough understanding of financial and budgeting processes and principles.
- Strong personal and professional judgment, which are invaluable skills for a role that contributes to hiring decisions as well as in finding the best solution to organizational dilemmas.
- Adaptability, able to respond quickly to a shifting reality and adjust initiatives and priorities accordingly.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 3-5 years successful operations and/or supply chain management experience and/or related 2-4 year college degree.
- Knowledge of applicable DOT/FMCSA/ELD requirements.
- Financial acumen with concentration of P&L reporting and labor management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Strong customer service focus.
- Preferred: Manage employees subject to collective bargaining agreement.
