This position is open to Alaskan Residents only.
What you will be doing:This Epidemiology Specialist 2 position is responsible for independently developing and implementing a range of epidemiological and evaluation activities for the Alaska Longitudinal Child Abuse and Neglect Linkage (ALCANLink) project and Alaska Partnership Access Line (PAL-PAK) and other statewide programs related to adverse childhood experiences, behavioral health, and child wellbeing in Alaska. This includes designing and conducting novel research, evaluation, and analytical investigations using a variety of statistical techniques and serving as a statewide expert on the factors predicting child wellbeing outcomes. Our organization, mission, and culture: The Maternal Child Health Epidemiology Unit is located within the Section of Women’s, Children’s, and Family Health, Division of Public Health, Alaska Department of Health. Our purpose is to provide reliable data for use in measuring and tracking health status, planning and evaluating programs, guiding public health policy, and preventing poor health outcomes. Through our programs and partners, we collect, analyze, and interpret information on women, children, young adults, and families. The ALCANLink project specifically aims to identify causes and contributing factors to child well-being, particularly adverse childhood experiences. The Epidemiologist position is vital to this work, as the incumbent will make decisions about how to synthesize, visualize, and present the data to have the greatest impact. The benefits of joining our team:The MCH-Epidemiology team is a group of less than 15 members who collaborate and appreciate one another’s diverse expertise yet also enjoy quiet time independently digging into data. We meet on Wednesday mornings, for short “Epi Bashes” to discuss current projects and gain insight from others. Once per month, we participate in an “Epi Methods” group with colleagues from other sections in the Division for refreshers on basic epidemiology concepts and to learn about emerging techniques. Supervisors are highly supportive of professional development and encourage staff to attend opportunities when they arise. We are committed to employee health and well-being, offering opportunities for professional growth, development, and self-care in a supportive, collegial work environment with job stability and security. The working environment you can expect:This position is in the Frontier Building in midtown Anchorage, with a window office with views of downtown Anchorage with Susitna and the Alaska Mountain Range in the background. The work may require infrequent (once or twice per year) travel to conferences or meetings out of state. Although the Unit and this position primarily use R for statistical analysis, members of the team also utilize SPSS and SAS, as well as ArcGIS.Who we are looking for:To be successful in the position, the candidate will need the following core competencies:
