The Correctional Lieutenant position serves as a supervisor in IDOC facilities and is a vital position for the custody, control, and safety of all IDOC facilities. The ideal candidate should be able to manage issues and concerns of staff and individuals in custody to facilitate effective operations of the facility. We encourage all staff that meet the minimum requirements to apply for the Correctional Lieutenants position.
1. Supervises staff. Assigns and reviews work. Provides guidance and training to assigned staff. Counsels staff regarding work performance. Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs. Establishes annual goals and objectives. Approves time off. Gives oral reprimands and effectively recommends grievance resolutions. Prepares and signs performance evaluations. Reviews activity reports.
2. Makes daily inspections of all buildings and housing units in his/her assigned area or zone. Verifies and monitors security, health, safety, and sanitation irregularities. Confirms zone is kept clean and safe at all times. Assists in handling of daily needs for individuals in custody in area or zone. Directs shakedown and security inspections. Conducts daily uniform inspections during roll call. Monitors count procedure. If miscount occurs, directs a recount and determines location of discrepancy. Verifies officers are working their assigned posts and do not leave their posts unless properly relieved or authorized.
3. Arbitrates individuals in custody disputes. Investigates complaints and corrects any deficiencies of said complaints. Conducts special investigations making recommendations to supervisors. Communicates well with staff and individuals in custody. Acts as a member of Adjustment Committee, Assignment Committee, and inquiry Board making recommendations and submits disciplinary reports on individuals in custody for rule violations.
4. Establishes and maintains complete training records on all security personnel. Plans and conducts pre-service and in-service training. Prepares training materials and aids. Conducts basic in-service training to all staff. Conducts refresher and special training for all personnel. Assists officials in making studies of institutional operations for the purpose of determining training needs. Coordinate changes in procedures being taught and new material introduced. Arranges outside sources and maintains attendance records on in-service staff. Reports unauthorized absences to supervisor.
5. Complies with key and lock control and tool control procedures in assigned area or zone by reporting broken, lost, or malfunctioning keys, tools, and equipment. Maintains inventories and records related to the safety and security of the facility. Makes periodic inspections of all weapons and equipment. • Reports damaged or missing equipment. Inventories all ammunition. Coordinates firearms orientation of new officers and re-qualification of all security personnel. Verifies all weapons are functioning properly.
6. Prepares, submits, and reviews a variety of reports for accuracy and completeness. Relieves superior officers and/or other security staff during their absences. Utilizes Offender 360 for individuals in custody payroll and visitor restrictions. Performs institutional audits.
7. Monitors compliance with all administrative directives and institutional directions when operating a vehicle to transport individuals in custody on writs, furloughs, and transfers. Directs the logistics of transfers of individuals in custody departing and entering the facility. Cuffs and escorts individuals in custody.
8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school and completion of an approved Correctional Officer Training Program.
2. Requires two (2) years of experience as a Correctional Officer in a penal or security institution.
1. Prefers two (2) years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant in a penal or security institution.
2. Prefers at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
3. Prefers experience using Microsoft Outlook, Disciplinary Tracking or similar software.
4. Prefers knowledge with Roster Management and Overtime Equalization in the event they are required to run shift.
