Salary:
Starting salary for this position is $1,299.00 bi-weekly ($33,774.00 annually). All selected candidates will be hired in at the starting salary. Upon successful completion of Claims Investigator probationary training period, the salary will be increased to $1,394.00 bi-weekly ($36,244 annually).
Work Location:
This position is currently a remote position. You may be called into the office for training or production purposes. You will be required to provide your own equipment for this position. Our system does not support Mac computers. While in training, you will need to utilize a camera. If your computer does not have capabilities for a camera, you can utilize your computer to follow training and another personal device (example: phone or iPad) for video. This position will require your computer to be hardwired into your internet utilize an ethernet cable. You will also need to provide a space to work in your home free of distractions. Please note, there is always a potential for you to be required to come into the office due to employer needs.
About the Job:
The Claims Investigator Agents works for DWD’s Unemployment Insurance division. They are responsible for investigating the circumstances leading to an individual’s unemployment claim, applying laws and policies to resolve a wide variety of complicated issues on a claim, reviewing an employer’s account with regard to an individual’s claim, issuing timely and accurate determinations of eligibility, defending determinations of eligibility at appellate hearings, and troubleshooting claim issues.
A Day in the Life:
The essential function of this role are as follows:
Determine what issues exist on an unemployment insurance claim;
Conduct an in-depth interview of an individual and employer to determine why an individual is unemployed and all sources of income;
Write a detailed decision for each issue on the unemployment insurance claim determining if the individual is eligible for unemployment insurance;
Review unemployment benefit charging information for accuracy; defend determinations during appeal hearings; determine what exhibits to offer during hearings;
Troubleshoot issues on individual claims; consult federal and state laws, rules, policies, and procedures for guidance;
Utilize DWD’s customized information technology system to perform assigned duties; recognize and escalates system errors.

What You’ll Need for Success:
We are looking for talented individuals who can think logically, ask difficult questions to reconcile claim differences, and make credibility determinations. A successful candidate is a self-starter who is able to meet deadlines and isn’t afraid of a challenge.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
Minimally have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and/or three (3) years of comparable experience.
Ability to learn and apply information taught in training about unemployment compensation laws.
Ability to interpret and apply technical manuals, memos and written guidelines regarding the unemployment compensation laws of fifty states.
Ability to learn claims procedures.
Demonstration of professionalism and tact in dealing with agency staff, claimants, and employers.
Ability to communicate effectively state and federal statutes and administrative regulations, as well as policies and procedures to peers and subordinates.
Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly master new technology and incorporate it into the work routine.
Quick and efficient decision-making skills and excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
