Job Description:
The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard. You are NOT required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position.
The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for a Laborer. This is a permanent full-time state position located at Camp Umatilla in Hermiston, Oregon.
This position is represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) union.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The Laborer position performs general laborer-type work assisting journey level and skilled trades’ people in building maintenance and repair, roads and grounds maintenance, and painting. Support for maintenance of facilities, equipment, utilities (electrical, biomass, and propane), and grounds, security, safety, administrative support, environmental management and compliance, communications, purchasing, janitorial, postal services, security, surveillance, safety, building maintenance, vehicle support when required, Wildland Fire and Services, and Government Furnished Property and Services. This position uses hand tools and motorized equipment.
Working Conditions:
Exposed to loud noises; works from ladders and various types of lifting devises from heights. Exposed to unsanitary conditions. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Works in windy, cold, or inclement weather. Manual labor is required. Uses power tools; required to push, pull, and lift up to 50 LBS, and maneuver up to 90 LBS. Required to perform duties wearing personal protective equipment. Occasional work is required outside of normal duty hours to mitigate emergency situations. Required to bend, stoop, and stand for long periods of time. May be required to operate Powered industrial trucks (forklifts, man lifts, mowers, and similar equipment). May be required to work on elevated areas.
Work Experience

Work experience is based on a 40-hour work week. (Example: 20 hours a week for one year would equal six-months of work experience.)
WHAT YOU NEED TO QUALIFY:
Must be 18 years of age at time of hire;
Must be able to read, write, and speak English (to complete reports and follow verbal instructions);
Experience operating hand tools and motorized equipment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess and maintain a valid driver license;
NOTE: If applying from out of state, please be prepared to provide a 3 year driving abstract from your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
Conditions of Employment:
Must have and maintain a favorable Criminal background History check and be able to obtain and maintain a favorable Department of Defense National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) Suitability Determination. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude appointment, the circumstances involved in the conviction will be considered;
Employee is required to maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with OMD Drug/Alcohol CPM’s, Policies, and the Statewide Drug Free Workplace Policy 50-000-01.
Requested Skills/Special Qualifications:
Experience with basic maintenance and repairs on small equipment;
Experience operating a forklift;
Experience in landscape maintenance.
