The Rhode Island Department of State (The Department) is looking for a Front-End Web Developer who will be responsible for the user interface of the Department’s website as part of a tech savvy team dedicated to making government more accessible and transparent. The Front-End Web Developer will work in collaboration with the Visual Communications Manager and Chief of Information to implement web content that better connects Rhode Islanders to their government.
The Front-End Web Developer will assist in identifying new opportunities and solutions for sharing the vast amounts of data and information the Department offers. The ideal candidate will have a strong sense of public service, as well as a strong desire to write “clean” code to produce a fully functional and accessible website.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed
The Front-End Web Developer performs various duties including, but not limited to:
Manages the production of new web content including design, HTML/CSS content management, and graphic support;
Responsible for wireframe development, website layouts, and user experience page enhancements;
Works with staff to regularly review existing web content to update/remove outdated information and broken links;
Complements the work of the Visual Communications Manager by providing guidance and best practices for both user experience and user interface when implementing content online;
Helps staff develop user interface strategies to better reach desired audiences;
Assists the Visual Communications Manager with additional projects and other tasks as needed; and
Performs other duties as required.
Required Qualifications for Appointment
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associates or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or Computer Information or any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the previously described education and experience.

Proficient in HTML, CSHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery
Strong foundation in UX and UI design principals
Experience with Visual Studio IDE (Integrated development environment) or other text editor
Experience with version control tools such as GIT and TFS (Azure DevOps Server)
Experience designing responsive pages and W3C coding standards
Solid analytical thinker with problem solving capability
Experience with graphic design applications (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite)
Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and visual through diagrams)
