State of South Carolina Hiring for Criminal Justice Training Instructor (PSU) at Columbia, SC Full Time

Job Responsibilities

Duties Include

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (Academy), Police Science Unit (PSU)is currently seeking an instructor. The instructor will function under general supervision and perform daily duties to support the operation of the unit. Duties include the following:

• Conduct and coordinate classes as a primary and backup instructor in Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) training. Serve as the primary instructor for Basic Patrol Operations, Crimes-in-Progress, Building Clearing, Strategies of Arrest, Detective Training, and Practical Training Courses. Enforces student discipline.
• Serve as a backup instructor for Interviewing, Officer Survival, Sexual Assault, and Narcotics Undercover Technician classes. Assist with the Active Shooter training in the School Resource Officer Program.
• Prepare and update student material. Maintain the currency and accuracy of existing programs in assigned areas of responsibility. Research curriculum content to maintain the currency and relevancy of training material. Ensure current training materials support the necessary job-specific knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the specific program task analysis.
• Perform law enforcement duties during times of critical incidents, whether natural or man-made crisis events requiring law enforcement response. Required to do “ride-a-longs” and assist other law enforcement agencies (i.e., state, local, city, county, etc.) in times of need or as required.

Salary

Minimum and Additional Requirements

• The hiring salary starts at $58,197 and goes up commensurate with LEO instructional experience.

Minimum requirements:

• High school diploma and eight (8) years of law enforcement experience or
• Associate degree and six (6) years of law enforcement experience or
• Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of law enforcement experience and
• Experience must include two (2) years of road experience and
• Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) or
• Currently certified LEO in another ***jurisdiction with full powers of arrest with the ability to become an S.C. LEO within one year of hire.
• Must obtain SC CDL within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer that you currently possess the following:

• Two (2) years of experience writing lesson plans and/or developing training material.
• Basic Instructor Development (BID) or Specific Skill Instructor (SSI) certification
• Active Shooter certification

• Considerable knowledge as a uniformed patrol officer.
• Must acquire/maintain a valid SC CDL as required for bus transport.
• Extensive knowledge of contemporary LE principles, practices, techniques, tactics, and methods .
• Able to research and develop comprehensive lesson plans in assigned training areas.
• Responsible for controlling all training delivery in assigned areas of instruction.
• Adheres to safety and testing procedures.
• Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; analyze problems and make appropriate recommendations.
• Able to coordinate the work of students and enforce student discipline in a fair, but firm manner.
• Able to work effectively under limited supervision using individual discretion and prudent judgment.
• Work in a professional manner with others in a team environment to achieve common goals and objectives.
• Adhere to the chain-of-command and agency policies/procedures.
• Manage time effectively, completes administrative work, meets deadlines, problem solves, and accurately completes assignments.
• Maintain good physical condition to facilitate and conduct demonstrations.
• Available for occasional travel and field training requiring after hours, overnight and/or weekend duty.
• Ability to maintain good physical condition to facilitate and conduct demonstrations and work in the practical problems training area.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
