The Department of Design at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor of Graphic Design beginning in Fall 2024. The recently created Department of Design offers a NASAD-accredited BFA in Graphic Design, and a minor and Master of Arts in Digital Design & Fabrication. Situated within the School of Fine & Performing Arts, the Department prepares students for a broad range of current and emergent design practices.
We seek a candidate with a passion to teach core graphic design skills, typography, and visual communication to undergraduate majors. Desired areas of specialization include: UI/UX design, augmented reality, motion graphics, data visualization, visual programming, design of three dimensional objects and environments, and emergent forms of publishing. The successful applicant will typically be expected to teach 6 undergraduate courses during the academic year and will be encouraged to develop curriculum in their area of specialization. As an active design practitioner and scholar, the ideal candidate will foster a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment that engages diverse learners.
The candidate will complement the department faculty’s strengths as a blend of active design practitioners and scholars. Along with teaching and creative research, we welcome applicants from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented on college campuses and who are committed to inclusive and collaborative design practices in their scholarship and teaching. Qualifications: Required:
• Terminal degree in Graphic Design, Communication Design, other design discipline, or an associated discipline plus demonstrated design practice and research agenda (A.B.D. considered).
• Demonstrated proficiency in industry-standard digital applications and user-centered design practices. Candidates should show substantial evidence of a range of advanced graphic design skills/practice, articulate discourse, and knowledge of design history and contemporary critical issues.
• Teaching experience at the undergraduate level and present evidence or promise of an active program of creative research and scholarship
• Capability of teaching at all undergraduate levels
• Interest in curricular development is expected, as our curriculum responds to evolving pedagogical needs in the discipline.
Preferred:
• Full-time university level teaching and administrative experience
• Experience/interest in collaborative projects and teaching
