THE ROLE
The Senior Graphic Designer will be responsible for in-house design projects and for hiring and supervising freelance designers when workload requires. From time to time, StoryCorps retains the services of an outside creative agency to concept and design a campaign for a specific initiative. The Senior Graphic Designer will work closely with the agency to implement the campaign across all required materials. The Senior Graphic Designer will create systems and templates for the creation of all StoryCorps visual materials across all departments and oversee the successful delivery of all projects. They will also manage the inventory of StoryCorps’ marketing collateral, ensuring there are sufficient materials available for events, outreach, and other marketing opportunities.
Under the supervision of the Director, Marketing & Digital Engagement, the Senior Graphic Designer will also codify systems to support the complex network of sub brands that are being developed at StoryCorps. They will partner closely with external contractors to ensure that all visual collateral being created is consistent with our visual brand standards. This brand hierarchy will lay the groundwork for an anticipated brand refresh. The Senior Graphic Designer will be a key voice in the development of the new visual brand, the rollout of the brand refresh, and the management of the new brand.
This position is designated as a union position. As such, it is subject to the terms and conditions outlined in our Collective Bargaining Agreement with CWA Local 1180.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
Brand Management
Steward the StoryCorps visual brand
– – Ensure all visual design projects conform to the organization’s brand standards;
– – Implement a brand system to support a portfolio of sub brands with varying goals and needs
Work closely with creative agencies; manage portfolio of and relationships with freelance designers
– – Collaborate with creative agencies to extend campaign designs across a range of visual assets;
– – Develop a roster of independent contractors whose work meets StoryCorps standards, making recommendations per project as needed;
– – Oversee the work of independent contractors, contract, fees and invoicing for design projects
Create co-branded materials and messages, in collaboration with corporate sponsors and partner institutions
– – Manage relationships with independent contractors to support all graphic design/visual identity projects; ensure all independent contractors conform to StoryCorps brand standards and that their work meets the organization’s project goals and timelines
Marketing & Communications Creative
Design and/or oversee the design process of all institutionally branded materials in a range of formats, including:
– – Printed materials (brochures, postcards, posters, print/outdoor ads);
– – Promotional items (tote bags, T-shirts,, etc);
– – Signage and environmental graphics;
– – Digital communications (PowerPoint template, email templates, digital ads, web banners); and
– – Gifs and other animated digitally-optimized formats
Design efficient systems and processes for producing designed materials that ensure stakeholders are aligned in support of a design concept and that all materials are routed and approved by appropriate parties
Organize and manage StoryCorps digital assets such as templates, logos, photos, audio files, and testimonials ensuring that staff from across the institution have access to the assets they need for their projects
Prepare orders and artwork files for production by vendor and oversee production process ensuring a high-quality outcome
Develop creative visual content for organic and paid social, employing social media best practice to elevate StoryCorps content such as stories, animations and blog
Collaborate with the social media manager, Production and Animations team to employ brand continuity across digital content and visuals
Provide direction and support in the implementation of participant and brand photography
Create, adapt and edit video creative assets for social media
Monitor and update inventories for printed materials
Participate in marketing and communications strategy and planning conversations as necessary
Perform other tasks to support StoryCorps’ Marketing & Communications function, as assigned.
ABOUT YOU
Required:
– 5+ years of relevant graphic design experience in support of marketing and digital communications for a similar kind of organization or in an agency; product design as well as client communications/client support experience a plus;
– High standard of design/design aesthetic (effective use of typography, layout, color and a strong eye for visual composition) and ability to work within established brand system as demonstrated by a quality portfolio;
– Experience creating and overseeing design/production processes that involve multiple stakeholders;
– Proficiency on a Mac platform and in Adobe Creative Suite Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign;
Microsoft Office word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software; Basic HTML knowledge.
– Superior organization skills, multi-tasking ability, and attention to detail;
– Cultural humility and experience working successfully with diverse groups of people.
– Ability to work under deadlines, to organize information and handle multiple assigned tasks efficiently;
– Able to maintain a positive and productive attitude in the face of challenges; able to give and receive constructive feedback;
– Ability to be flexible and adaptable in order to contribute to problem-solving activities within a growing, changing organization;
Preferred:
– Demonstrated experience with photography, videography, photo and video editing;
– Experience using After Effects or other motion graphics software programs;
– Bi-lingual Spanish/English (verbally and in writing).
– Impeccable visual presentation skills;
– Understanding of marketing, advertising, print production, website/multimedia design, corporate identity, and product design/packaging;
