Plans, supervises, and is responsible for the work of subordinates engaged in inspecting plumbing, gas, and sewer line installations and equipment for compliance with plans and specifications, the plumbing code and other pertinent ordinances, and accepted safety and health standards; and performs other related duties as required.
One (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works – Building Division in Hilo.
The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: the principles and practices of supervision, the Hawai`i County plumbing code and other pertinent ordinances, and legal procedures involved in their enforcement, standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the plumbing trade, basic principles of hydraulics as they apply to plumbing installations, accepted safety and health standards as related to plumbing and gas installations and equipment, and the administration of and legal interpretations concerning the plumbing code and ordinances.
Ability to: plan, direct , and coordinate the work of subordinates, read and interpret the plumbing code and ordinances and apply them to specific cases, read and interpret plans and specifications for plumbing and gas installations and compute capacity of such systems, arbitrate disputes with firmness and equity, deal tactfully and effectively with plumbing contractors, workers, and the general public, and keep records and prepare reports.
