Job Description:
Are you looking for a fulfilling career where you will make an impact on students and our future? If you are looking for a career that draws and expands on your communication, leadership, and collaborative abilities, consider teaching.
Here in North Carolina, there are ways you can start your teaching career while getting your teaching license. That means you don’t need to have a license to apply for a teaching job today.
So, how exactly does this work? Some programs, called Residency Licensure programs, require you to secure an open teaching position in a school district in North Carolina first. If that district is considering unlicensed candidates for that position – typically in high-need subject areas like math, science, special education, and foreign languages – they will reach out to you for next steps. Once you go through the interview process and get offered the job, your new district will help enroll you in a local alternative teacher training program.
Other programs allow you to begin your alternative teacher training program before you are officially hired. In either case, once you are hired as a teacher, you’ll earn a full teacher’s salary and benefits while you are working towards your license. Additionally, some districts will cover some or all of your training costs.
Qualifications:
To take advantage of North Carolina’s policy, you need to have a bachelor’s degree in a field of study related to the subject you’re looking to teach. NC is interested particularly in high-need areas. So, if you have a degree in a STEM field or a foreign language and you’re looking for a career change, teaching might be for you.
Core Responsibilities:
Leadership: Lead entire classes in learning the fundamentals of math, world issues, writing and so much more. Or lead your fellow teachers in a development session. Teaching is leading.
Creative problem-solving: How do you engage students in hard-to-understand concepts? How do you create “aha” moments with a group of kids? As a teacher, you’ll use your creative problem-solving abilities to engage and produce rich discussions in your class.
Communication skills: We all learn differently. As a teacher, you must sharpen your communication skills daily to ensure you’re having an impact on your students’ learning.
Teamwork: Work with other teachers to develop lesson plans or develop new teaching methods that can be used across subjects and classrooms.
How to Apply:
TEACH is here to help you navigate this process. We can help connect you to the districts and schools that are looking for teachers and guide you through the job application process. With these two pieces in place, you can be a teacher within a matter of months. Interested in learning more or pursuing this path? Visit https://ontch.org/3omAkjT to sign up and learn more.
