Tennessee Department of Transportation Hiring for TDOT Historian at Nashville, TN Full Time

Overview

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Environmental Division Technical Studies Office is currently hiring two (2) full-time Historians in the Cultural Resources Section in Davidson County.

The Cultural Resources Section is a vital part of TDOT’s Project Development and Delivery processes as well as operation and maintenance of existing facilities. The Section is responsible for ensuring compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, U.S. Department of Transportation Act, and Tennessee Code Annotated (T.C.A.) 4-11-111. The Section identifies and assesses effects to historic and architectural resources within a TDOT project area and conducts interagency coordination and consultation with state and federal agencies. TDOT Historic Preservation works with the project designers to avoid and minimize effects to historic architectural resources. TDOT Historic Preservation consults with the State Historic Preservation Office, the TN Historical Commission, and Consulting Parties throughout project development

Responsibilities

• Responsible for ensuring compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, U.S. Department of Transportation Act and T.C.A. 4-11-111
• Develop and review staff/consultant architectural survey reports
• Conduct interagency coordination and consultation with state and federal agencies for architectural resources on TDOT projects
• Work with project designers to avoid/minimize impacts to historic architectural resources
• Assist with development of written processes, training, and QA/QC for project deliverables

Special skills, knowledge or experience required or desired

• Experience in conducting architectural surveys
• Experience interpreting roadway plans
• Technical writing and excellent communication skills

Minimum Qualifications

• Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, or closely related field
• Experience equivalent to one (1) year of full-time professional environmental program, environmental studies or cultural resources experience

AND, due to this position working with the National Historic Preservation Act, the U.S. DOT Act, and T.C.A. 4-11-111, the position also has the following professional requirements:

• Graduate degree in history or closely related field; or a bachelor’s degree in history or closely related field plus one of the following:

1. At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or

2. Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of history.
