McClatchy is seeking an experienced developer to join its News Experiences team. Developers on the NewsX team serve McClatchy’s 30 markets by creating and enhancing the experiences of our digital products and advancing McClatchy’s mission of high quality, local journalism.
Some of our recent work has been recognized for its outstanding achievement:
“House of Cards” won a People’s Voice Webby this year for Best Editorial Feature. It examines the circumstances that led to the collapse of the condo in Surfside. This coverage also earned a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news.
“Just Like You” was a finalist for a Scripps Howard Innovation award in 2021 It generates stories and data visualizations based on user inputs.
“Security for Sale” published May 1 and is a deep dive into the real estate market in North Carolina.
The ideal candidate will work as part of a fast-moving team that focuses on the news experiences of our readers. That includes enhancing the presentation and performance of our websites, creating unique story-telling experiences for our best content, and building visualizations and interactive graphics to tell stories with data. The successful candidate will also implement new features, iterate on existing concepts, and refactor code to fit changing business needs.
A motivated, collegial work style is a must, as is the desire to learn continuously. A strong track record working with news is preferred but not required.
Job Requirements
– HTML
– CSS
– JavaScript (ES6, custom elements and DOM manipulation)
– Understanding of responsive design / interaction design and user interfaces
– Familiarity mining or manipulating API data and Web scraping
– Ability to conceptualize data visualizations and creative storytelling working with newsrooms
— Ability to create tools to assist newsrooms in publishing content
– Ability to make deadlines and work on deadline
– Ability to quickly adapt to new priorities

Qualifications
— BA, BS, or BFA in computer science, design, statistics, journalism or a related field
— 3+ years of professional experience
— Portfolio demonstrating strength in theory and implementation
