SSJC looking for educators to join our preschool team.
The Scandinavian School of Jersey City is a growing community serving children between the ages of 1-9 years old, across three buildings, all located on the same city block in downtown Jersey City, minutes from Manhattan. We are a vibrant community of passionate and professional educators, all working alongside our supportive families to honor children and childhood. At the center of our work is our view of the child as curious, capable, confident and full of ideas that deserve our respect, time, investigation, understanding and joy.
SSJC is looking for likeminded, professional and passionate early childhood educators to join our team this fall as we are expanding to our third location. The ideal candidate has an advance degree in ECE, familiarity with Reggio Emilia approach and 3-5 years of experience working in a similar environment. We are looking for colleagues who bring with them a passion for childhood education, who see themselves as co-learners alongside the children and who understand the immense importance the environment – inside and outside the classroom has on children’s experience, educators who support children’s social and emotional learning through respectful and developmentally appropriate practices that foster an attitude of problem-solving and empathy.
At SSJC we observe and document the children throughout the year. We use our documentation to further the children’s interests and build on their investigations, and it is used in various ways to spark dialogues, build bridges between home, school and wider community, as well as to honor our children’s thoughts, ideas, growth in moments, big and small. Our educators write Learning Stories throughout the year, which become part of a child’s portfolio and travel with them throughout their years at SSJC.
SSJC is a community of learners who embrace the pillars of our school: View of the Child, Eco-Sustainability, Outdoors, Mindfulness and Social Justice. As we grow as a school and learning community, it is important that our educators do as well. We highly value professional development, coming together for meetings, co-creating a strong school culture, continuously learning from one another and wider educational network. We hope to welcome new colleagues who bring with them a spirit of community learning and excitement for the many possibilities to cultivate a feeling of responsibility and inner strength for our children to advocate for themselves and others. We are looking for colleagues who are lifelong learners and who are collaborative, resourceful, responsible and who value multiple perspectives. We are looking for educators who believe their children can change the world.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, creating a culture of inclusivity, democracy and empathy in the classroom, planning and facilitating developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for children, following the framework of emergent curriculum, having long term and short term learning goals, being flexible and easily adaptable in the goals, supporting children’s interests, creating opportunities for collaboration, scaffolding knowledge, building learning bridges outside of the classroom – connecting children to experts, community and tying their inquiries to real life experiences, understanding national and local learning standards and requirements, making sure the learning is connected to the standards and the children will have an easy time transitioning to learning environments after SSJC, supporting cognitive, social-emotional, physical development of the children, setting up and maintaining a classroom that reflects SSJC standards for learning and engagement, providing and taking care of materials that support the learning; observing, documenting and reflecting on the individual and group growth and development, building and nurturing parent/family connections, writing Learning Stories for each child, making children part of the process of their learning and reflection, collaborating with children, families, colleagues and wider community, bringing the learning outside of the classroom, researching, growing as an educator, sharing professional development experiences with colleagues and families, being an advocate for children and childhood, spreading joy and contributing to lifelong love of learning for children.
And be ready to be outside, a lot. After all: “There is no such thing as bad weather!”
