DESCRIPTION
The Marine Physical Laboratory division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking to hire a Human Resources Assistant.
Under general supervision of the Human Resources/Academic Personnel Manager, and work direction from HR Generalists, the incumbent shall provide administrative support pertaining to:
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience performing and analyzing payroll/timekeeping functions.
Ability to juggle multiple things simultaneously with repeated interruptions and to keep various things moving forward incrementally while prioritizing work items due to urgency and high priority.
Excellent verbal and compositional skills. Ability to compose documents and memorandum in English using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to convey facts and ideas in a clear, concise and comprehensive manner.
Proven ability in maintaining strict confidentiality at all times overall, pertaining to all human resources, timekeeping and payroll matters.
Excellent writing skills for composing documents and correspondence. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage. Strong skill in proofreading own work and the work of others.
Proven experience and ability to interpret and analyze policies, explain and advise. Strong problem-solving and innovative skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to independently follow tasks through to completion and to take ownership of work performance.
Skill to clearly communicate information tactfully and effectively to diverse groups of people both on the phone and in person.
Skilled in use and operation of Mac computer and various application software (Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.). Skill in use of calculator, scan, fax, copy machines and a variety of office equipment.
Ability to take various policies and procedures into consideration and determine appropriate course of action. Ability to act with independence. Strict attention to detail and ability to accurately complete documents in a timely manner. Skill to organize and correlate information from a variety of sources. Ability to explain and defend various HR policies and practices.
Ability to act independently with confidence in matters that fall under job purview and ability to consult with and keep HR Manager informed on matters if and when necessary. Ability to work in a networked, team environment where shared information is vital to business practices and to have discretion to know when information is confidential and not to be shared.
Ability to think independently and creatively and make recommendations based upon reasoned but creative analytical thinking in situations that often have uniquely combined components.
Demonstrated math skills to accurately calculate percentages.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must have a valid CA Driver’s License.
Able to regularly travel locally to on-site meetings and conferences and to other buildings at SIO in La Jolla and Point Loma.
Must be US Citizen or Permanent Resident to have access to primary MPL administrative offices.
