The Laboratory Technician performs moderately complex to complex laboratory procedures, including blood draws, urinalysis with microscopy, and QBC/hematology. Responsible for daily quality control checks and maintenance of quality assurance documentation. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times and delivers quality customer service.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Performs venipuncture using vacutainer, syringe and butterfly techniques. Utilizes capillary punctures using heel and finger stick techniques
- Prepares equipment to efficiently collect specimens, utilizing appropriate identifying and labeling procedures
- Instructs patients on urine collection procedures and allocates urine specimens
- Enters laboratory data into computer system accurately and in a timely manner
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area
- Inventories supplies and places orders
- Conducts designated laboratory testing
- Maintains knowledge of all routine container and minimum volume specifications required for specimen collection and participates in semi-annual proficiency testing
- Maintains the lab for bi-annual inspection by the state
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times
- Monitors biohazard waste, following proper disposal procedures
- Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment and monitors
- Responds in a timely manner to abnormal and panic laboratory values
- Performs all other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification from an approved agency
- Basic computer literacy proficiency
- Tuberculosis screening as well as proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis through lab confirmation of immunity, documented evidence of vaccination, or a doctor’s diagnosis of disease
- Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination, and boosters when applicable, prior to employment to ensure compliance. Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in related field
- American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification
- 1+ years of related experience in a medical setting
- Participates in the development of annual budget and manages department costs and resources to adhere to budget. Resolves problems through interaction with clients via phone calls or other means of communication.
Physical & Mental Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
- Ability to push or pull heavy objects using up to 100 pounds of force
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to use fine motor skills to operate office equipment and/or machinery
- Ability to properly drive and operate a company vehicle
- Ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and/or in writing
- Ability to use logical reasoning for simple and complex problem solving
