Job Discription
In the Department of Otolaryngology, this position will be responsible for the design and delivery of research projects, in collaboration and in support of other researchers and Principal Investigators. This individual will conduct experiments and collaborate to develop, execute and interpret research projects, including basic science and clinical research. In addition, this individual will perform complex laboratory and data collection techniques, including use of live animals. In addition, this position will be responsible for the planning and preparation of various medical resident educational courses.
Research
Design, development, and execution of clinical and preclinical research projects in conjunction with faculty and medical residents. This process includes review of the current literature and preparation and execution of all Institutional Review (Clinical studies) and Animal Care Committee (Preclinical studies) documents for University review and approval prior to study initiation.
Working with sponsoring companies in developing a research plan for funded studies. The process includes the development of the research plan, budgets, preparation and execution of regulatory documents (applications, study consents , research protocols, appendices, case report forms, etc.) formulation of study related deadlines and responsibilities in addition to the preparation and execution of grants contracts in collaboration with departmental research administrators.
Organize and coordinate annual departmental research/resident teaching courses which include a) temporal bone dissection, b) sinus dissection laboratory, c) head and neck anatomy, d) soft tissue workshop, and e) tracheal injection laboratory. The courses involve development of a course agenda, budget, submission of grant requests, procurement and preparation of tissues/materials and coordinating equipment requirements with the various vendors.
Executing and maintaining study case report forms, managing and organizing study data, and preparation of the final study report and manuscript for publication when appropriate.
Work with and guide ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) resident physicians in conducting in-vitro and/or in-vivo surgical procedures on a variety of animal species.
Educate and facilitate attending and resident research while allowing the residents to gain experience in all facets of the research process from study design to manuscript preparation and submission for publication.
Chemical Hygiene Officer- responsible for maintaining all lab spaces and insuring that our labs are in compliance with University requirements for chemical use, storage, disposal and documentation.
Conduct experiments with in vivo animal models and perform animal surgery as per established research protocols.
Replicate, refine and add new research approaches based on project needs. Test, customize and implement new methods, procedures and techniques.
Perform animal surgeries and monitoring.
Develop and write advanced, comprehensive experimental protocols.
Monitor project developments on an ongoing basis. Propose and implement changes as needed.
Communication
Contribute material, prepare results and assist in the writing of research findings for publications, papers, presentations, grants, and other documents for publication.
Assist principal investigator in grant and manuscript submission.
Staff Management
Guide, train and advise lower level researchers, medical residents, and students on techniques, methods and procedures.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned
Bachelor’s degree in science or related field required. Master’s degree in science preferred.
A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
